The North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) announced its selections for the 2014 College Division All-State Baseball Teams on Monday. Twenty-four players representing seven different North Carolina Universities and Colleges were named to the 2014 NCCSIA College Division All-State Teams.
UNC Pembroke led the way with five selections followed by Wingate, Catawba and Greensboro with four each.
The Braves were led by four first-team all-state selections: senior infielder Daniel Fraga, junior infielder Jordan Edgerton, junior outfielder Drew Cole and junior designated hitter Dalton Knight.
Fraga led UNC Pembroke in batting average (.392), runs scored (60), hits (85), on-base percentage (.474) and stolen bases (21) to go along with four home runs and 36 RBI. Fraga earned NCAA Division II All-American honors by ABCA, NBCWA and Daktronics in 2014.
Edgerton was first on the team in home runs (11), RBI (58), doubles (20), total bases (135) and slugging percentage (.608) in addition to a .369 batting average. Edgerton, an All-Southeast Region and All-American honoree as well, was drafted in the ninth round by Major League Baseball’s Atlanta Braves.
Cole hit .346 with six home runs and 47 runs batted in while starting all 51 games and Knight batted .335 with three round-trippers and 50 RBI. Cole was an All-Peach Belt Conference pick while Knight garnered all-region accolades. The Braves finished 33-18 on the season.
Wingate tallied three first-team all-state picks: junior catcher Josh Clark, senior outfielder Eric Serra and senior pitcher Olen Little.
Clark started all 51 games and finished with a .291 batting average, two home runs and 42 runs batted in while Serra led the team in hitting (.353), home runs (seven), runs batted in (46), total bases (114) and slugging percentage (.610). Serra was a 2014 Second-Team All-South Atlantic Conference pick.
Little fashioned an 11-1 mark this year to go along with a 2.18 earned run average and 68 strikeouts en route to First-Team All-South Atlantic Conference and All-Southeast Region accolades. The Bulldogs finished with a 34-17 record in 2014 and earned a share of the SAC Regular Season Championship.
Three players for Guilford were 2014 NCCSIA First-Team All-State picks. Senior infielder John Macon Smith was an NCAA Division III Third-Team All-American and a First-Team Capital One Academic All-America® honoree by CoSIDA this year.
Smith led the Quakers in hitting (.459), runs scored (44) and on-base percentage (.459) to go along with six home runs and 40 RBI this year and won the prestigious Harry G. “Doc” Jopson Award, given annually to the top male athlete in the ODAC.
Senior infielder Corey Wallace was an All-South Region and All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference selection this spring after leading the Quakers in home runs (nine), runs batted in (49) and slugging percentage (.736) to go along with a .421 batting average.
Guilford junior relief pitcher Avery Rogers earned a win and picked up a pair of saves in addition to 17 strikeouts and a 2.70 earned run average.
Two Catawba pitchers garnered first-team all-state accolades: junior starter Craig Brooks and senior relief pitcher Ryan McClintock.
Brooks was an NCAA Division II All-American selection by both Daktronics and NBCWA and was the Southeast Region and South Atlantic Conference Pitcher Of The Year. Brooks finished with a 12-3 record, a 2.32 earned run average and 104 strikeouts.
McClintock posted a 4-0 record with eight saves and a 2.20 earned run average en route to all-league, all-region and honorable mention All-American accolades. Both players led Catawba to a 35-20, both the SAC Regular Season and Tournament Championships and a berth in the NCAA Division II Southeast Region Tournament this past spring.
Rounding out the 2014 NCCSIA College Division All-State Baseball First Team is Lenoir-Rhyne junior outfielder Ivan Vieitez. Vieitez, a Daktronics Third-Team All-American and a First-Team All-Southeast Region and All-SAC selection, led the conference in batting average (.451) in addition to a team-leading 39 runs scored, 65 hits, 15 doubles, four home runs, 38 RBI, 100 total bases and a .694 slugging percentage. Vieitez was also the squad’s top pitcher, finishing with a 5-5 record, a team-best 2.95 earned run average, 46 strikeouts, three complete games and two shutouts.
The NCCSIA All-State second-team is comprised of Greensboro College’s Drew Baranosky, James Feldman, Blake Throneburg, and Jon Krecicki, Chowan’s John Hunter and Tyler Burden, Catawba’s Keaton Hawks and TJ Wharton, Wingate’s Ben Currie, UNC Pembroke’s Andy Sullivan and Lenoir-Rhyne’s Brantley Rumford.
Nominees were submitted by North Carolina sports information professionals and voted on by the NCCSIA members.
Founded in 2002, The North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) is comprised of sports information professionals from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA and independent institutions from the state of North Carolina. The purpose of the organization is to promote collegiate athletics at all schools. Membership is open to anyone affiliated with a college, university or conference located in North Carolina, and whose area of responsibility lies within sports information.
NCCSSIA selects all-state teams in the University (Division I) and College (Division II, III, NAIA) divisions for men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, softball and baseball.
