GREENSBORO, NC — Greensboro College Director of Athletics John Trice announced on Wednesday that Katie McNerney has been named the new head coach for the Pride men’s and women’s swimming programs.
“Katie McNerney will be an excellent additional to our department,” Trice said. “She has great experience and her drive to succeed is infectious. I am confident this will take our men’s and women’s swimming programs to the next level.”
McNerney graduated from Clarion University of Pennsylvania where she received a BA degree in Psychology while minoring in coaching. While attending Clarion, McNerney was a highly decorated swimmer receiving back-to-back All-America honors in 2000 and 2001. In her 2000 All-American campaign, McNerney’s 200-meter freestyle relay team ranked third in the nation in addition to her 400-meter freestyle and medley relay teams being national qualifiers. McNerney also qualified nationally in the 100-meter freestyle as an individual.
Following her graduation from Clarion University, McNereney served as the head coach for Villa Maria Academy. In her first season at the helm of Villa Maria, McNerney vaulted the team seven spots in the district from 10th to third. Following a successful first season as head coach at Villa Maria, McNerney led the team to a second place finish in the district one year later before going on to win three straight district titles to end her tenure.
In 2011 McNerney became the assistant swim coach at Millersville University in 2011 where she also served as the program director and head coach for the Marauders Masters USMS team. During her three seasons aiding the Millersville swim team in the competitive Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, the team recorded an overall 9-14 dual meet record.
McNerney takes over a Pride women’s swimming program that finished the 2013-2014 season with a 8-5 dual meet record while the men’s team compiled a 4-5 record in nine dual meets.
