Saturday night Protest and High Point Post 87 declared ineligible for American Legion State Baseball Tournament:’Dual Participation Rule’ in viloation

from the American Legion State Baseball Tournament in Lexington, N.C. at Holt-Moffitt Field comes one of the most ball-stopping moves of the entire baseball season…This one comes in as a true ‘Slider/Curve’ and I guess we will have to call this a ‘Slurve’…..

The previously unbeaten High Point Post 87 HiToms(2-0) have been declared ineligible….

Post 87 High Point’s Cesar Trejo(Ragsdale HS), had earlier this month participated in an UnderArmour baseball tryout in Peachtree, Ga. Trejo’s participation in that event was deemed a violation of the dual participation rules and made the player ineligible.

There was a BIG Saturday night protest that carried over into Sunday morning and eventually involved the National American Legion baseball office in Indianapolis…..

The teams that High Point Post 87 had beaten in the State Tournament, Shelby(39-1 coming into the tournament and on a 34-game winning streak) and Wayne County, were given forfeit victories. Now both Shelby and Wayne County will remain in the State Tournament and the Post 87 High Point HiToms are out…

Shelby was the main team filing the protest….The Shelby team came into the American Legion State Baseball Tournament riding a 34-game winning streak and Cesar Trejo had key hits that helped helped High Point Post 87/HiToms defeat Shelby on Saturday and thus ending Shelby’s record winning-streak and sending Shelby into the loser’s bracket of the tournament….Shelby was (39-2) after the loss to High Point Post 87….

High Point topped Shelby 12-5 on Saturday and that kept the HiToms unbeaten, at (2-0) in the tourney….

Info from above coming in from the Lexington Dispatch Newspaper on-line, by way of the Gaston Gazette with Richard Walker getting credit for breaking this story and for content details in this story and post…Richard Walker, well-known writer for the Gaston Gazette on top of this one…..

Read more/all from Richard Walker(Walker, an N.C. State-grad and one of the top American Legion Baseball writers on the East Coast) by way of the Gaston Gazette, at the Lexington Dispatch on-line when you CLICK HERE….

*****Shelby turned in High Point Saturday night after the HiToms beat Shelby and Shelby’s appeal was denied at the State level here in North Carolina, but they were given forfeiture win/victory status from the National offices in Indianapolis, Indiana on the basis of High Point have a player in their lineup who was deemed to broken the ‘Dual Participation Rule’….*****

You really don’t want to get Deemed doing anything wrong in Lexington, the home of former North Carolina Tar Heel QB/TE Deems May….

  1. I just found out that the National American Legion Office has been selling High School Baseball Players private email addresses, phone numbers, home addresses to Baseball Factory for $30k. What has happened to America. Are we willing to sell the souls of our youth for profit? STOP THE INSantiy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Amazing how Legion Baseball Players are recruited to attend Baseball Factory Camps and are declared ineligible.

When something smells bad there is a reason. Guess who is the Host of the National American Legion Tournament? Shelby!!!!!!!!!

  2. At no point did Cesar break any single rule. Baseball Factory evens are completely sanctioned by American Legion, there was a fault in jurisdictionim this case. This is madness, the rules clearly state that Baseball Factory events are sanctioned.

  3. This is Cesar Trejo, I would like to take the time to clear the flaws in this inaccurate article. First of all, I attended the “BASEBALL FACTORY UNDER ARMOUR TEAM ONE BASEBALL SOUTH SHOWCASE”. This is the link to the showcase, http://www.teamonebaseball.com/showcases/article/1216/

Here you can clearly see that this is a BASEBALL FACTORY showcase event. Second of all, this was no “tryout” like is stated above; I as well would like to state fact how this article as well as the Lexington Dispatch Newspaper failed to include that this was a Baseball Factory event, which is clearly stated on the website above.

Now, this is the interesting part. Here on this link is the official 2014 American Legion Tournament rules. http://www.legion.org/documents/baseball/tournament_rules.pdf

Now, if you go to the fifth page of that article and read bullet number 5 this is what it states,
“Once American Legion Baseball tournaments begin (District play through World Series play)
no player can participate in another amateur baseball event, UNLESS that program has been
sanctioned by The American Legion. Currently only Baseball Factory and USA Baseball
    events have been sanctioned).”

If it makes it easier, here is a picture of the actual rules, http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d33/cestrejoz14/OfficialTournamentRules_zpsf04cb0eb.png

It is absolutely clear that the event I attended was a Baseball Factory event. So at what point was any rule broken? I would really like to know which rule I broke by attending a SANCTIONED event which is clearly stated to be sanctioned in the American Legion rule book.

I cannot begin to express the discontent with this ruling. At no point did my team nor myself break any rule. For our team to be disqualified from the State Tournament, which we have worked so hard for, is completely irrational and wrong.

In conclusion, American Legion has failed with their ruling by disqualifying Post 87 HiToms from the State Tournament. The reporting newspapers as well have posted inaccurate information as to what happened. Thank you for taking the time to read my post, I hope that this inaccurate ruling will be clarified soon.

  4. Absolutely ridiculous ruling by American Legion Baseball. This is an injustice yet no one is doing anything about it….this is America where justice should prevail. This ruling by the American Legion should be protested…..they make a lot of money off of these kids including a cut of the proceeds from the group that put on the very camp that this kid attended. Shelby is really bush league for their actions……All teams were told at he beginning of the tourny to report any concerns about ineligible players on other teams before play begins, or the protest would not be heard……why was their protest allowed to be heard…..the camp that this attended was an American Legion sanctioned camp, so really there were no rules violated……..an absolute shame for these kids that have worked so hard all summer…..shame on Shelby and shame on American Legion Baseball.

  9. The High Point Enterprise with Mark McKinney said in today’s on-line post that Post 87 got 86ed…

“We feel there was a tremendous amount of hypocrisy in this decision,” Post 87 HIToms president Greg Suire said Sunday evening.

“We did not do anything to gain an unfair advantage on the field and we feel we followed all the rules as we understood them. We’re very disappointed for our season to end in this way.”

“The national guidelines and the national tournament guidelines are two different sets of rules,” Suire explained. “Apparently, Trejo’s appearance at the workout was deemed to violate one set of rules but not the other. The American Legion gets $30,000 from the Baseball Factory and shares info with this group, yet a player can appear at one of its events and later be ruled ineligible.”

Suire appealed the national office’s ruling on Sunday, but that appeal was denied. Suire, who said he was still weighing legal and other options, scheduled a press conference at Holt-Moffit Stadium for later Sunday night.

  10. My apologies on posting many times, my post was not posting at first so I just kept trying. There must have been some sort of lag.

  11. No problems or trouble at all Cesar….Thanks for taking the time to send this and you got your point across and that is what needed to happen…

Keep us informed as this might still be an issue that is a work in progress…

We wish you the best on the field and don’t let this slow you down any, keep working hard and fight for what is right, whether it be in right field, left field or behind the plate…

Keep working hard and thanks again for stepping up and posting your side of the story….

  12. Cesar and Greg– You guys are right !!! It breaks my heart to see this ! As you know I love and support American Legion Baseball and it hurts to see them shoot themselves in the foot yet once again. You guys earned it on the field and they should NOT have taken it away. Greg you are a class act. We need some changes ASAP.
