Controversy at the CVCL Baseball Tournament in Mooresville as K’ville Bulldogs are taken out on the ‘Phantom Tag’

Kernersville defeated the New River Roadrunners 11-1 to reach the semifinals of the rain shortened league tournament Saturday afternoon.

Duncan Everett hurled the victory fanning 13 batters and allowing only two hits. Brandon Burkes with three hits and four rbis, Chris Corbett with two hits and two rbis and Josh Stephens and Tanner Mathis with two hits paced the Bulldogs who picked up their 45th win of the year.

The Bulldogs had to turn around and play the host team Mooresville Spinners that was already fresh and waiting after their Thursday win.

The Spinners claimed a 5-4 controversial win in the nightcap! Trailing 5-0 after four innings the Bulldogs rallied and thought they had the game tied in the bottom of the eighth as Ben Temple scored on a bases loaded single by Drew Beaver but was called out on a phantom tag ending the inning. Thomas St.Clair and Avery Rogers hurled shutout baseball for the final five innings allowing the Bulldog rally. Kevin Jordan and Beaver paced the Bulldog attack!

The hosts Spinners would claim the tournament title with a 5-4 win on Sunday over the second seed Catawba Stars.
