Former Elon Men’s Soccer Standout Latigue Signs With Carolina Railhawks

CARY, N.C. – The Carolina Railhawks announced the signing of former Elon University men’s soccer standout Gabe Latigue to its club on today, Aug. 5. Latigue becomes the second active former Phoenix player on the Railhawks along with Austen King.

“We are thrilled to add another player that learned the game in the Triangle,” said RailHawks President Curt Johnson. “He is truly a product of soccer in North Carolina. We expect great things from Gabe during the 2014 Fall Season.”

A three-year starter over his career for the maroon and gold from 2009-2012, Latigue played in 82 matches for Elon, scoring 15 goals along with 17 assists. In 2011, Latigue helped the Phoenix capture its first-ever NCAA Tournament berth and Southern Conference Tournament title after scoring a goal on a penalty kick in the championship match versus UNCG. The following year, the Apex, N.C., native had the game-winning goal in the SoCon Tournament championship match versus Wofford for Elon’s second straight tournament title and was rewarded as the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament.

After graduation, Latigue was selected in the 2013 Major League Soccer Supplemental Draft by the New England Revolution. After earning a contract with the club in March 2013, Latigue was loaned to USL Pro’s Rochester Rhinos, where he made 16 appearances and had two assists. He also appeared in two games with the Revolution during that season in U.S. Open Cup action, starting two matches and recording an assist before an injury cut short his season.

Latigue and King joins Clint Irwin (Colorado Rapids), Steven Kinney (Chicago Fire) and Daniel Lovitz (Toronto FC) in the MLS as former Elon men’s soccer alumni currently playing professionally.

The RailHawks return to WakeMed Soccer Park this coming Saturday, Aug. 9, to take on the Tampa Bay Rowdies at 7:30 p.m.
