Talking to the coaches:Coach Chris Causey(Western Guilford)

Hooked up with Chris Causey today from Western Guilford High School and hit Coach Causey with the 10 questions that we have been laying out this week for our Guilford County coaches…Big influence on Coach Causey from former WG head coach Doug Henderson and Coach Henderson is the main thread that is still running through that Western Guilford program today…They will name the WGHS Football stadium in his honor, during the Southwest Guilford game on September 12…

Our 10 questions today for Coach Causey:
1)Who will be your team leader(s)?
Kevin Gehsman and Tevin Evans….Both 3-year starters…

2)How many years have you been coaching and is this your last stop?
22 years at Western Guilford, this will Coach Causey’s 12th year as head coach…Took over from Charlie Griffin and played at Western for Doug Henderson…All Western during Coach Causey’s entire coaching career and I’m sure he would want to conclude his work there and make this his last stop…

3)How many players on Varsity?
33 on Varsity and 37 on JV….

4)Who is the toughest team that you have ever coached against?
Hal Capps’ Western Alamance teams, Dudley teams coached by Steven Davis, Page teams led coach Kevin Gillespie, Southeast Guilford teams with Fritz Hesenthaler at the helm….Tough Burlington Cummings and Reidsville teams in the old 2-A conferences….Also matchups with Coach Tommy Norwood were big and tough…WG defeated Ragsdale twice when Ragsdale had RB Toney Baker and topped Western Alamance, once when the Warriors had QB Donald Britt..

5)The coach you have learned the most from?
Most learned playing for:Doug Henderson(WG) and Mack Brown(UNC)…Coaching with:Charlie Griffin(WG)…Coaching against:Tommy Norwood(Ragsdale) and Hal Capps(Western Alamance)

6)Your Top offensive returning players?
Kevin Gehsman(RB), Tevin Evans(QB), Keenan Stevens(WR), Ryjaan Glover(WR), Rashad Bovian(RB), Park Kissner(OL), Andy Dixon(Center)…Evans #1 at QB, with Taylor and Flippin at backup spots for now…

7)Top defensive returning players?
Gehsman, Michael Youngblood, Raynard Thomas, Akil Chavis, Rashad Bovian, Keyuntis Dean and the newcomer:Raymond Duncan…..Many of the skill guys such as Evans and others will see time both ways….

8)Who will win the Mid-Piedmont 3-A Conference?
North Forsyth is the favorite on most lists….Asheboro, Southern Guilford, Ledford and Central Davidson will be teams to watch…

9)Your greatest satisfaction you receive from coaching?
Seeing guys come in as 14-15 year-old young men and see them grow into men of character…It is satisfying to watch the maturation process of these kids and as coaches we are privileged to be with the kids during a major portion of their day, say sometimes 3-4 hours and maybe another hour if you have them in class during the school-day and that is a lot of responsibility and you can not take it lightly….You get a chance to be a major influence in these football players lives and you literally really get to observe them, as they grown up and become young men…

10)Among the Guilford County Schools from today or from the past, your program most resembles?
Western Guilford under Doug Henderson….Tommy Norwood’s Ragsdale program, he is one of the classiest coaches around….With Coach Norwood, you get the same person on and off the field…He is a ‘class act’….Outside of Guilford County, the Hal Capps programs at Western Alamance….Coach Capps was one of a kind and his football teams were an extension of him as a person….

  1. Probably not directly related, but that’s a pretty good family tree with Jack Youngblood, Jim Youngblood, Jay Youngblood and Mark Youngblood, all in there somewhere…

Jack and Jim had some great years with the LA Rams and Mark and Jay did good/OK for the NWA….
