Talking to the coaches:Coach Eric Rainey(Southwest Guilford HS)

Caught up with Eric Rainey this afternoon and had a real good talk with the former Ferrum Panther, back around the Chris Warren days and Coach Rainey is looking forward to the new season at Southwest Guilford with his Cowboys and the new season is now two weeks in and the scrimmages are beginning and SWG will host High Point Christian in a scrimmage on Tuesday morning….The Cowboys’ practice times are going from 8-11am this week and they will hit their afternoon schedule/stride early next week….

Our 10 questions today for Coach Rainey:
1)Who will be your team leader(s)?
Ambrose Jackson 6’5/240 defensive end and offensive tackle….Middle linebacker Juan Pagan…2-year starter…
At quarterback SWG has Eric Cunningham and Devonte Cross…SWG looks to Cunningham to do a number of things…Could see him in the slot, at WR, RB and for sure at QB..Cowboys hope to use Cunningham much like they did Rick Mack last season….

2)How many years have you been coaching and is this your last stop?
14 years coaching…First year was at Wakefield HS in Arlington, Virginia…Came to SWG as an assistant under Brian Davis….2014 will begin Coach Rainey’s second year as head coach of the SWG Cowboys and he plans to be at SWG for a good while to come…Has two young sons, one in the 9th grade and one in the 6th grade and he hopes to see them through…

3)How many players on Varsity?
Varsity 45-46 and on JV’s about the same, 45-46….

4)Who is the toughest team that you have ever coached against?
The High Point Andrews team from last year was very talented…..They could hurt you in so many different ways and very tough on both sides of the ball…

5)The coach you have learned the most from?
Dave Davis, the Defensive Coordinator at Ferrum College in Virginia and from Coach Davis’s son, Brian Davis here at SWG and from Coach Kevin Gillespie at Page High School…

6)Your Top offensive returning players?
Eric Cunningham-QB…Jeremiah Brown-WR

7)Top defensive returning players?
Ambrose Jackson-DL….Juan Pagan-MLB

8)Who will win the Piedmont Triad 4-A Conference?
Southwest Guilford

9)Your greatest satisfaction you receive from coaching?
We focus on touching kids lives in a positive way and we stress Academics and Character….Those are the keys and if you see that working then we can feel some level of satisfaction about the job we are doing….

10)Among the Guilford County Schools from today or from the past, your program most resembles?
We are trying to build a winning tradition and to be successful just like all of the High Point high schools…..

  1. I am veery interested in seeing how this team does this year. There is a different attitude and work ethic under Coach Rainey than in previous years. They will get tested early, but could surprise some folks this year.
