GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College head men’s golf coach Corey Maggard has resigned his position to become assistant men’s golf coach at Auburn University, Quakers Athletics Director Tom Palombo announced Friday.
Maggard came to Guilford in 2010, five months after the sudden passing of hall of fame coach Jack Jensen. Maggard led Guilford to 16 tournament wins in his four seasons, including four-straight Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Championships. He was named the Jack Jensen ODAC Coach of the Year three-straight seasons from 2011-13. Guilford spent time ranked first in the nation by Golf World and in the Golfstat.com rankings in 2011 and 2012. The Quakers finished ninth at the 2011 NCAA Division III Championships, 11th in 2012 and 17th in both 2013 and 2014.
“Corey had a difficult job following a legend like Jack Jensen,” Palombo said. “No one could replace an icon like Coach Jensen.
“Corey was able to put his own stamp on the program. He worked very hard to help make the Jensen Golf Center a reality. He really embraced Coach Jensen’s legacy and never shied away from the expectations we have for our golf program.
“He has a tremendous opportunity at Auburn and I know he will do a great job. We will miss him and Katie as they were an important part of our Guilford College family.”
“Corey is a winner and a big-time addition to our program,” Auburn coach and former Wake Forest University standout Nick Clinard said. “He did an incredible job at Guilford and won four-straight conference championships. I’m excited to welcome Corey and his wife to the Auburn golf family.”
Guilford’s Noah Ratner ’13 was selected a three-time first-team PING All-American and ODAC Golfer of the Year from 2011-13 and received the 2012 Jack Nicklaus Award as the Div. III National Player of the Year.
Maggard coached three All-Americans and had 11 golfers earn 18 All-ODAC awards, including Tanner Gross, who was a second-team PING All-American in 2014 and won the Golf Coaches Association of America’s Phil Mickelson Award as Div. III’s top rookie.
A search for Maggard’s successor is underway. The Quakers open the fall season by hosting the Tournament Town Championship Preview Sept. 21-23 at the Grandover Resort and Conference Center. Guilford hosts the NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championships for the sexind straight season at Grandover in May 2015.
