GC Pride Men’s Soccer Tops Guilford 1-0 In Overtime

GREENSBORO, NC — Shaun Watt connected on a header off a feed from Whit Maupin, as the Greensboro College Pride toped the Quakers of Guilford in two overtimes 1-0.

Both teams had their chances throughout the course of regulation, but neither team were able to find the back of the net.

In the first overtime period, Marco Figueroa had his shot glance just wide of the goal to keep the game even at 0-0. Watt connected for the game winner just three minutes into the second overtime giving the Pride their first victory of the season.

Logan Rohde picked up the shutout win in the goal for the Pride stopping three Quaker shots.

“It was a heck of a college soccer match tonight even though it was not our best game, ” Pride Director of Soccer John Trice said. “I give the guys a lot of credit with the game winner, but we have a lot of areas that we need to improve on.”

The Pride held a 16-11 advantage in shots in the contest with Watt, Figueroa, and Scott Fatyol leading the way with three a piece.

With the win, the Pride opens their 2014 season with a perfect 1-0 mark. The Greensboro men will be back in action on Saturday, September 6th when they travel to take on Roanoke College in the Shelllenberger Memorial Classic hosted by Lynchburg College.
