Kristin Heldt Named Big South Volleyball Player of the Week

HIGH POINT, N.C. – Senior Kristin Heldt of the High Point University volleyball team was named the Big South Conference Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. Heldt was named to the Duke Invitational All-Tournament team after hitting .303 and recording her 1,000th kill over the weekend.

Heldt hit .303 with 3.08 kills per set, 14 blocks, 20 digs and three aces to lead HPU to a 2-1 record at the Duke Invitational. Heldt opened the season with 15 kills and finished one block short of a double-double with nine. She also had eight digs in the match. She hit .227 against No. 21 Duke with seven kills, six digs and three blocks.

Heldt entered the final match of the weekend 14 kills away from 1,000. After putting down just two kills in the first set, she responded with six in the second set to go along with two aces. The Panthers trailed 18-20 in the third set and Heldt put down three kills, including one to go ahead 22-21. She then served two aces in the final three points, including one to win the set 25-21. In the third set she needed six kills to reach 1,000 and she got seven. Her 1000th kill gave HPU a 23-19 lead and she also scored the 25th point of the set. Heldt hit .520 in the win.

Heldt was a second-team All-Big South selection the last two years and an All-Freshman honoree in 2011.

High Point’s home opener is set for Friday at 5 p.m. against Eastern Washington at the Millis Center.
