Greensboro College Pride Volleyball Tops Salem In Home Opener 3-2

GREENSBORO, NC — The Greensboro College Pride volleyball team returned to the win column on Wednesday evening as the defeated the Spirits of Salem College 3-2.

The Spirits put Greensboro behind in the match early 1-0, as they took the first game by a 25-19 score.

After dropping the first set of the match, the Pride opened up the second set of play on a 7-2 run behind the serves of Breana Baker, Shayla Moss, and Darrian Bolt. Greensboro College maintained a slight advantage throughout the second set of play, until the Spirits were able to rally back to even the score at 19-19. However, the Pride closed out on a 6-1 run to win the set 25-20 evening out the match at one game apiece.

Greensboro College built on the momentum of the second set, winning the third set to go up 2-1 before Salem came back to force a decisive fifth set of play.

In the final set of play, the Pride came out of the gate fast jumping out to a 3-0 lead before Salem cut the deficit to within one point at 6-5. Down the strectch of the final set, Greensboro would not let Salem get any closer then three points pulling away for the 15-12 set victory. With the fifth set win, the Pride won the match 3-2.

Greensboro College senior Liz Widenhouse led the way for the Pride with 28 kills, while Shayla Moss and Dallas Hasty each recorded 13 kills. Setters Bari Tressler and Darrian Bolt passed for 28 and 26 assists respectively in the match. Holly Anders had a team high 24 digs.

With the win, the Pride improves their overall record on the season to 2-3 and will return to Mayo C. Harlow Court on Saturday, September 6th for the Greensboro College Volleyball Invitational. The Pride will square off with the Quakers of Guilford at 10 AM before taking on the Scotties of Agnes Scott at 4 PM.
