Krieger Paces Elon Phoenix In Opening Round of Tar Heel Intercollegiate Golf Tournament

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Jeff Krieger fired a one-under par 71 as the Elon men’s golf squad opened the 2014-15 campaign at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate on Friday. Krieger’s performance helped the Phoenix to a team score of 293 following day one.

The Phoenix sits 13th in a field of 18 programs. Host North Carolina paces the group with a 273, while Charlotte (282) sits second. Three programs – VCU, East Carolina and Chattanooga – are tied for third at 286.

Krieger’s 71 has him in a tie for 20th out of the 100 competitors. He began his day with seven consecutive pars before posting a birdie on the par-three eighth hole. Krieger would move to two-under after posting a birdie on the par-three 14th hole before giving one stroke back with a bogey on the 560-yard 17th hole. Krieger’s 15 pars trailed only the 16 recorded by Boston College’s Patrick Hallisey

Just two strokes back in a tie for 43rd is Jonathan DiIanni. He carded two birdies, on the par-five third and 17th holes.

Troy Beaver will begin the second round in a tie for 56th after shooting a 74 on day one. Beaver notched one of three eagles recorded by Phoenix players as he carded a three on the third hole. He added 13 pars.

After five straight pars to open his season, Will DiIanni ended his first round with a mark of 75 to tie for 69th. He had one eagle as he had a three on the 17th hole.

Charlie May began his Elon career with a par, birdie and eagle on his first three holes to get to three-under. May would end the round with a mark of 75 to share 69th place.

Phoenix players are scheduled to begin their second round at 9:10 a.m. on the back nine of the Finley Golf Course.
