CORVALLIS, Ore. – The High Point University women’s golf team shot 298 on Tuesday and set a new program record with a three-round score of 893 at the Oregon State Invitational in Corvallis, Oregon. The Panthers finished the tournament in third place out of 10 teams.

“I am very pleased with the way we played here in Oregon,” head coach Vici Pate Flesher said. “The hole placements were very difficult today but we were able to hit the ball to safe spots on the green and drain some key putts. Sarah and Tan both played extremely well this week and put up some great scores. Danielle, Grier and Casey all had some great moments and Cayla was very impressive in her first collegiate competition. This tournament showed that we are a very deep team and we are only going to get better.”

The three-round score of 893 by the Panthers is the lowest that High Point has ever posted in a 54-hole tournament. The previous low score for 54 holes was 900, which HPU scored last season at the UNCG Starmount Fall Classic.

Sophomore Sarah Bae had the second-lowest round of the day on Tuesday with a one-under 71 to move into a tie for third place with a three-round total of 219 (74-74-71). The sophomore’s 54-hole score is the second-lowest three-round total in program history. Bae holds the record for 54 holes after shooting 214 at the Starmount Fall Classic last season.

Junior Tan Cheeranont was tied with Bae after the second round and shot an even-par 72 on Tuesday to finish in a tie for fifth with a personal-best 54-hole score of 220 (72-76-72). Sophomore Danielle Fuss shot 75 in the third round and finished in 19th with a two-day total of 224 (73-76-75). Freshman Cayla Smith finished in a tie for 36th with a total score of 234 (78-75-81) while senior Grier Bennett finished tied for 40th with a 54-hole score of 235 (75-80-80).

Junior Casey Ward turned in a three-round score of 237 while competing as an individual to finish the tournament in a tie for 44th.

Host Oregon State shot a combined 297 on Tuesday and claimed the team title with a three-round score of 879. San Francisco finished in second, 10-strokes back of the Beavers, with a combined score of 889. Portland State and Boise State finished one stroke behind HPU in a tie for fourth with matching scores of 894.

Isabella Leung of Hawaii finished as the individual medal winner with a 54-hole score of 215. Leung beat Oregon State’s Anica Yoo by three strokes to earn medalist honors.

High Point returns to action in two weeks when the team will compete in the Forest Oaks Fall Classic in Greensboro, North Carolina beginning on Monday, Sept. 29. The two-day tournament will be hosted by UNCG.
