HPU Women’s Golf Sits In Fifth At The Oregon State Invitational

• Junior Tan Cheeranont and sophomore Sarah Bae lead the team with matching scores of 148.
• The Panthers shot 294-301 over 36 holes on Monday.
• High Point trails team leader Oregon State by 13 strokes.

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The High Point University women’s golf team sits in fifth place out of 10 teams with a combined team score of 595 after the first day of the Oregon State Invitational in Corvallis, Oregon. Junior Tan Cheeranont and sophomore Sarah Bae are tied for the team lead with a score of 148.

The Panthers finished the first round of the day in third place with a score of 294 before shooting 301 in the second round of the day.

Cheeranont shot an even-par 72 in the first round and followed with a 76 to finish the day in a tie for 17th. Bae carded two-straight rounds of 74 to tie Cheeranont in 17th.

Sophomore Danielle Fuss shot 73-76 on the day to finish one stroke back of Cheeranont and Bae in a tie for 19th with a score of 149. Freshman Cayla Smith turned in a score of 78 in her first collegiate round then carded a 75 in the second round to end the day in a tie for 32nd with a score of 153. Senior Grier Bennett had scores of 75 and 80 to end the day tied for 40th with a 36-hole total of 155.

Junior Casey Ward competed as an individual and finished the day in a tie for 47th with a two-round total of 158 (80-78).

Host Oregon State leads the tournament with a two-round combined score of 582. San Francisco finished in second with a score of 585 while Boise State ended the day in third with a score of 586. Portland State finished just ahead of HPU in fourth with a score of 594.

Clare Sorenson of San Francisco carded a two-round score of 141 after shooting the low round of the day with a 68 in the second round to lead the individual standings. Sorenson leads by one stroke over Hawai’i’s Isabella Leung and by two over Boise State’s McKenzie Ford.

The Panthers return to the Trysting Tree Country Club on Tuesday for the third and final round of the Oregon State Invitational on Tuesday, Sept. 16. The round will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. PST.
