College Men’s Soccer Final – Guilford 3, Ferrum 2 (OT)

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Jonny Goffredi (Stanardville, Va./Jack Britt (N.C.)) headed in a Colin Dillon free kick with 97 seconds left in overtime to give Guilford College a 3-2 win over visiting Ferrum College Tuesday night. The winning goal secured the Quakers’ (2-5) second straight victory after Ferrum (2-2-1) overcame an early 2-0 deficit.

After a Ferrum foul near midfield, Dillon drilled the ensuing free kick into the box where Goffredi ran onto the ball and poked it over oncoming Panthers’ goalie Joe Martin from about eight yards out.

A Dillon corner kick set up the game’s first goal, a header by Robert Sandidge (Sanford, N.C./Lee Christian (Cape Fear C.C.)) in the third minute. Less than four minutes later Guilford doubled its lead when Izzy Betancourt converted a fine crossing pass by Christian Torres from the left flank for his first college goal.

The Panthers responded as Ferrum freshman Keith Ricks brought his team back to within a goal 11 minutes before halftime off a sharp pass from Michael Midyette. The speedy Ricks notched the equalizer in the 59th minute when he got behind the Quakers’ line for a quick pass from Kyle Simpkins and punched it past Guilford goalie Marko Mandalinic for his team-leading fifth marker of the year.

The teams were scoreless for the next 50 minutes, thanks in part to a nice save by Martin on Sandidge in the 65th minute. Neither team had many excellent chances before Goffredi ended the match with the second game-winning goal of his career.

The Quakers held a 19-10 edge in shots and took nine of the game’s 14 corners. Both Martin and Mandalinic finished with two saves apiece.

Guilford next plays Friday (9/19) at Old Dominion Athletic Conference rival Randolph-Macon College.
