Elon Cross Country Set for Adidas XC Challenge

ELON, N.C. – Coming off two wins on its home course in its last two races, the Elon University men’s and women’s cross country teams will travel to Cary, N.C., on Friday, Sept. 19, to compete at the Adidas XC Challenge, hosted by NC State. The meet is set to begin at 5:30 p.m. with the men’s 5K race followed by the women’s 5K run on the course at WakeMed Soccer Park.

Last Time Out
The Phoenix swept its sixth annual home meet, the Elon Invitational, last Saturday, Sept. 13. The maroon and gold men won the meet for the third straight season while the women won its third team title out of the last four years. Senior Jenny Gallagher and Luis Vargas won the men’s and women’s races, respectively, with Gallagher setting a new personal-best in the 5K run with a time of 17:55. Vargas won his second straight Elon Invite with his time of 25:19 in the men’s 8K run.

About Elon
Vargas became the first Elon student-athlete to earn a Colonial Athletic Association weekly award after being named the league’s Men’s Runner of the Week on Tuesday, Sept. 17. The honor was the fourth career weekly accolade for the Angier, N.C., native.

Gallagher was the first Elon women to win a race since 2011 with her first-place finish on Saturday. The Phoenix women were ranked at No. 11 in the most recent Southeast Region poll on Monday. Sept. 15.
