GC Volleyball Sweeps Quad Match at Home

GREENSBORO, NC – The Greensboro volleyball kicked of their quad match on Saturday by upending N.C. Wesleyan 3-0. In the night cap, the Pride won a thriller over William Peace 3-0.

Greensboro jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead, before pushing out to their largest lead of the set at 7-4. The Bishops responded by taking their only lead of the set at 15-13. The Pride used a 5-1 stretch to retake the advantage at 17-16. Down the stretch both teams traded points back and forth with Greensboro prevailing 28-26.

In set two, both teams traded points along with four ties before the Pride used a 3-0 push taking a 13-10 lead. N.C. Wesleyan came back to tie the match again at 15-15, before Greensboro took their largest lead at 20-16. The Bishops took the next four points tying the set at 20-20, but the Pride prevailed took control in the end winning 25-23and a 2-0 match lead.

N.C. Wesleyan started the third set strong putting the Pride in a 9-5 deficit, but Greensboro chipped into the margin using a 4-0 run and eventually tying things up at 14-14. Down the stretch both teams fought hard but the Pride pulled away in the end taking it 25-22.

Liz Widenhouse led the way with 16 kills, while Dallas Hasty had nine. Darrian Bolt led the way with 22 assists while Bari Tressler had 13. Holly Anders had 13 digs.

The night cap got off to an entertaining start, with eight ties and the final being at 10-10. At that point, a 3-0 spark gave the Pride their first lead at 13-10. Once in the lead, Greensboro caught fire thanks to a 7-0 run on four service aces by Dallas Hasty. William Peace cut into the lead, but the Pride ran away winning 25-18.

Breana Baker two service aces gave Greensboro the early 3-0 lead in set two. Both teams then traded points back and forth along with seven ties till the Pride used a two run push for a 12-10 margin. With the score tied at 16-16, Greensboro again caught fire with a 5-0 run making the score 21-17. Down the stretch, the Pacers got to within one; however the Pride held on for the 25-23 victory.

Another close set ensued before two service aces by Megan Baranko and Bolt propelled the Pride on an 8-1 run pulling out to a 13-5 lead. The Pacers got to within three at 15-12 and eventually tied things at 20-20. William Peace took a 24-22 lead but two kills by Widenhouse and an ace by Anders allowed Greensboro to close out the set on a 4-0 run winning 26-24 and the match 3-0.

Shayla Moss paced the Pride with nine kills, while Widenhouse contributed with eight. Tressler had a team high 17 assists, and Bolt had 11. Hasty had a team high four service aces and 14 digs.

With the two wins today, Greensboro improves to 9-4 overall and 3-0 in USA South play.

The Pride return to the court on Tuesday evening against Ferrum College visits. The match is set to begin at 7:00 p.m. in Hanes Gym.
