Elon Men’s Golf Opens Play at Rees Jones Invitational

DAUFUSKIE ISLAND, S.C. – One-over par rounds by both Will DiIanni and Jeff Krieger helped guide the Elon men’s golf squad to a sixth-place standing at the conclusion of the first round of the Rees Jones Invitational on Sunday. The Phoenix posted a 299 on day one.

Will DiIanni carded a 73 following a round in which he recorded three birdies. Krieger also posted three birdies on his way to a 73. The pair is tied for ninth out of 63 players in the field.

In a tie for 19th at the end of round one is Charlie May. May carded a two-over 74 and notched five birdies over his first 18 holes of play.

After shooting 79, Jonathan DiIanni is tied for 44th. He had one birdie.

Finally, Jake Leavitt shot an 83 and sits in 58th place after 18 holes. Leavitt had one birdie.

East Carolina’s Al Dickens sits atop the individual leaderboard after one round. Dickens shot an eight-under 64 and leads his nearest competitors by three strokes.

The team lead is held by co-host Kennesaw State. The Owls posted a first-round score of 285 and leads ECU by one stroke. Charleston Southern (293), Winthrop (295) and Campbell (296) complete the top five.

The second round of the tournament will be held on Monday at the Haig Point Club.
