College Volleyball Final – Bridgewater 3, Guilford 1

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Megann Grimes had 13 kills and Megan Lookabaugh added 12 putaways on .548 hitting in visiting Bridgewater College’s 3-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) volleyball win at Guilford College Wednesday night.

The Eagles (5-10, 2-2 ODAC) snapped a three-game losing skid with the 25-12, 20-25, 25-15, 25-16 victory. Guilford drops to 3-11 (0-4 ODAC).

Bridgewater scored the first seven points of the opening set and never looked back. The Eagles hit .400 as a team and took advantage of 13 Quakers’ errors to overcome Taylor Creed’s four putaways on .429 hitting.

The Quakers bounced back in the second set as Michaela Wall put away six of her seven kills in the game, which helped Guilford to a 25-20 win.

The third set was tied at 7-7 before Bridgewater’s Courtney Thornburg served up seven straight points. Grimes had two kills and a solo block in the decisive spurt. The Quakers rallied to within 18-13, but the Eagles closed on a 7-2 run to take a 2-1 edge.

Grimes finished with a flurry, recorded five kills in eight attacks with no errors (.625) in the fourth set. Shannon Skellchock set up 12 of her match-high 41 assists and Thornburg served up three of her match-best six aces. Bridgewater won 13 of 15 points with Thornburg on the serving line. Thornburg also finished with a match-best 15 digs.

Creed paced Guilford’s attack with eight kills. Wall and Kelsey Ruehling both chipped in with seven putaways. Casey Davis had 19 assists and 10 digs for her team-leading fifth double-double of the season.

Coach Emily Gann’s Quakers are back in action Sept. 30 with a home match against Greensboro College at 7:00 p.m.
