ELON, N.C. – The Elon University women’s soccer team dropped a 4-0 decision at the hands of Northeastern on Sunday, Sept. 28, at Rudd Field. The Phoenix fell to 4-6 overall and 0-2 in Colonial Athletic Association play to the defending league champion Huskies, who improved 7-3-2 overall and 2-0 versus CAA competition.

“Credit to a very well coached and organized Northeastern team,” said Elon head coach Chris Neal. “They were very good on their first two corner kicks and conceding goals on set pieces before and right after the half was the difference in the game today.”

Northeastern outshot the Phoenix 14-7 overall on the match and had seven shots on frame compared to three for the maroon and gold. The Huskies just edged Elon in corners, 8-7, after trailing by one, 3-2, in the opening period.

The Huskies struck first in the contest at the 30:52 mark where Carina Deandreis finished a Hannah Lopiccolo header pass in the box past Elon freshman keeper Hannah Macaulay. NU boosted their lead to 2-0 after the half in the 49th minute as Mackenzie Dowd scored off a corner kick sent in by Kimberly Slade.

Elon attempted to get on the board in the 51st minute after earning a set piece opportunity of its own. The Huskies defended the play well and nearly put the ball in the goal on the other end, but the Phoenix was able to recover and blocked Kayla Cappuzzo’s shot.

Lopiccolo posted the final two scores of the day for Northeastern in the 64th and 69th minute to give the Phoenix a 4-0 deficit. The match would end in that final score as both squads began to pull their regulars for the remainder of the game.

Seven different players had a shot for the Phoenix with Raychel Diver, Sydney Schilling and Erin Tanhauser each having a shot on goal. Macaulay had two saves while playing the entire 90 minutes between the posts.

The Phoenix will hit the road this weekend for a pair of matches. Elon will open at College of Charleston on Friday, Oct. 3, at 7 p.m., before heading to UNC Wilmington on Sunday, Oct. 5, for a match at 2 p.m.
