GREENSBORO, N.C. – The High Point University women’s golf team finished the first day of the UNCG Forest Oaks Fall Classic in seventh place out of 18 teams with a combined score of 611 through two rounds on Monday in Greensboro, North Carolina.
The Panthers led after the first round with a combined score of 296 but shot 315 as a team in the second round to fall to seventh with a two-round total of 611.
“We made a lot of mistakes all day long,” head coach Vici Pate Flesher said. “The difference between the two rounds was that in the first round we were able to bounce back from our mistakes and in the second we weren’t. The course was playing really tough and we didn’t shoot ourselves out of it, which is good. We need to do a better job tomorrow of sticking to our plan and not putting ourselves in difficult situations.”
Sophomore Sarah Bae shot an even-par 72 in the first round and a two-over 74 in the second to end the first day of the Fall Classic in a tie for fifth with a 36-hole total of 144. Bae had six birdies on the day with three in each round.
Junior Tan Cheeranont finished Monday in 12th with a two-round total of 149 (71-78). Cheeranont led all HPU golfers after carding a one-under 71 in the first round, but struggled in the rainy conditions the afternoon with a second-round 78. The junior had four birdies in the opening round before carding just one in the second.
Sophomore Danielle Fuss finished the first two rounds tied for 44th with a 36-hole score of 157 (76-81). Freshman Cayla Smith ended Monday tied for 54th with a two-round total of 159 (77-82), while senior Grier Bennett struggled on the day and ended tied for 83rd with a total score of 168 (84-84). Elon leads the team standings at the end of the first day with a combined score of 599 (298-301). Rollins (308-300), James Madison (306-302) and Maryland (305-303) are all tied for second with matching scores of 608 while UNC Wilmington is in fifth with a score of 609.
Mercer’s Katy Harris shot 70-72 on the day and stands atop the individual standings after two rounds with a score of 142. Alexandra Papell of Maryland is in second with a score of 144 (70-74) while Emily Brooks of Elon (75-70) and Meghan Theiss of UNC Wilmington (70-75) are tied for third at 145.
The Panthers will return to the Forest Oaks Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina for the third and final round of the UNCG Forest Oaks Fall Classic on Tuesday, Sept. 30. The round will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
