ROCK HILL, S.C. – Sophomore Jenny Marshall scored in the 101st minute to give the High Point University women’s soccer team a 1-0 double-overtime win over Winthrop in Big South road action on Wednesday night in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

“I am very proud of the way the team played tonight to get the win,” head coach Marty Beall said. “Our team defending was fantastic as we really limited what Winthop could do on the offensive end. We are creating a lot of good chances but we need to be more clinical with our finishing and we will continue to work on that moving forward.”

The Panthers earned a free kick at the start of the second overtime period and the ball was played into the box where senior Sarah Sermonet flicked it on towards net. Freshman Paige Rombach took a shot that was blocked and the rebound fell to Marshall who chipped a shot over the Winthrop keeper for her first goal of the season.

High Point controlled action throughout the game and finished with a 21-6 advantage in shots and an 8-3 edge in shots on goal. The Panthers have outshot their opponents by a 51-11 margin through the first two games of conference play.

Freshmen Alex Persiani and Jordan Beets combined for their fifth clean sheet of the season. Persiani played the second half and extra time, making two saves to earn her first collegiate win. Beets got the start and made one save in the first half.

With the shutout of Winthrop, HPU has gone 221 minutes without allowing a goal in Big South play.

The win was High Point’s first conference victory of the season as the Panthers move to 4-2-3 overall and 1-0-1 in Big South play. Winthrop drops to 3-6-0 overall and 0-2-0 in conference action.

High Point continues conference play on Saturday, Oct. 4, when the team heads to Conway, South Carolina to take on Coastal Carolina. Kickoff for the game is set for 5 p.m.
