GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College’s De’Eric Bell (Jackson, Ga./Jackson) scored three touchdowns and compiled 253 all-purpose yards in the Quakers’ 52-28 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) football win over visiting Washington and Lee University Saturday. Guilford is 4-0 (1-0 ODAC) for the first time since 1994.
Bell, a freshman running back in his first college start, rushed for a career- and game-high 149 yards and two scores in place of injured starter Josh Schow. He also caught a game- and personal-best five passes for 93 yards and one of quarterback Matt Pawlowski’s (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) five scoring tosses. Bell also returned a kickoff 11 yards.
Guilford scored 52 points for the third time in four games and rolled up 567 total offensive yards. Pawlowski completed 21-of-31 passes for 356 yards and five scores, which gives him 19 touchdown passes with no interceptions through four games. His 19 scoring passes rank seventh Guilford’s season history. He completed passes to 10 different receivers, four to Adam Smith (Mocksville, N.C./Davie), including the junior’s team-leading eighth touchdown catch of the year.
Guilford senior safety Satiir Stevenson (Roselle, N.C./Abraham Clark) recorded a school -record 22 tackles and made his third interception of the season, one of two Washington and Lee turnovers that led to Guilford scores. Teammate Hunter Hoots (Midway, N.C./North Davidson) made 14 stops against the Generals’ option-based offense, which compiled 343 of its 459 total offensive yards on the ground.
Generals’ quarterback Charlie Nelson had 114 rushing yards and a touchdown on 14 carries. He also threw a 27-yard touchdown pass on fourth down to Witt Hawkins that capped the game’s scoring with 3:19 to play. Teammate Marshall Hollerith ran for 98 yards and two touchdowns.
Guilford visits league-rival Shenandoah University next Saturday (10/11) at 1:00 p.m.
