HPU Volleyball Panthers Roll Past Charleston Southern In Straight Sets

• HPU picked up its first Big South win with a sweep of Charleston Southern.
• Three Panther attackers posted double-digit kills led by Kristin Heldt (15).
• Junior Wavie Chin tallied a match-high 14 digs.

HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University volleyball team picked up its first Big South Conference victory with a sweep of Charleston Southern on Saturday at the Millis Center. Junior Wavie Chin tallied a match-high 14 digs and senior Kristin Heldt led all attackers with 15 kills.

Three High Point attackers posted double-digit kills in the 3-0 (25-14, 25-13, 25-23) win over conference rival Charleston Southern. Kristin Heldt posted 15 kills with nine digs and five blocks while redshirt-sophomore Savannah Angel added 11 kills. Freshman Haley Barnes finished the match with 10 kills and three digs.

“The team came out with more commitment and focus today,” said head coach Jason Oliver. “I am proud of the way they responded after a tough match against Coastal Carolina last night. There isn’t an easy game in the Big South but we maintained our focus and composure when Charleston Southern pushed us in the third set.”

High Point outhit CSU .304 to .047 in the match and held the advantage in kills (49-22) and blocks (12-5). Senior Katie Vincent finished the match with six kills, six digs and seven blocks. Senior Chelsea Davis added 13 digs, seven kills and one blocks. Junior Gabi MIrand dished out 41 assists with three blocks and six digs.

HPU easily won the first two sets 25-14 and 25-13. Charleston Southern made the third set a battle. The Buccs led as late as 23-22 but High Point scored the final three points of the match. Davis tied the game, 23-23 with a kill and Heldt put down the final two kills of the day for the 25-23 win.

High Point heads to Virginia next weekend to face Radford on Friday and Liberty on Saturday.
