CONWAY, S.C. – The High Point University women’s soccer team fell on the road in double overtime by a score of 1-0 to Coastal Carolina on Saturday evening in Conway, South Carolina. The Panthers fell despite outshooting CCU, 19-14.

“Our technique in front of goal is horrible right now,” head coach Marty Beall said. “Obviously I am not doing a good job of getting through to our players about the technique they are using so I am taking responsibility for our lack of finishing. The girls’ play was fantastic. We came out slow in the first half but I was proud of the effort we showed in the second half and overtime. You have to give credit to Coastal Carolina for finding a way to win the game.”

Coastal broke through for the game-winning goal in the third minute of the second overtime period on a tally by Brenna Leftwich. The Chanticleers’ Kacey Kelley got loose on the right flank and delivered a ball across the face of goal to Leftwich who scored from just in front of goal.

The score by CCU broke a streak of 314 scoreless minutes to start conference play by the High Point defense.

High Point finished the game with a 19-12 edge in shots but managed to put just three shot on target in the contest.

Freshman Jordan Beets took the loss for HPU after playing in the second half and overtime. Beets made one save while dropping to 3-2-2. Freshman Alex Persiani played the first half and made two saves for High Point. Faith Farley made three saves and got the win for Coastal Carolina, improving to 5-3-0 in 2014.

The double-overtime game was the third in a row to open Big South play for the Panthers who fall to 4-3-3 overall and 1-1-1 in conference action. Coastal Carolina remains perfect in the Big South at 3-0-0 and improves to 6-5-1 overall.
