A big loss in our community and RIP to Mike Fleming of Fleming-Shaw Transfer and Storage plus the namesake of UNCG’s Fleming Gym

In memory of Mike Fleming:
This man gave and gave and gave his time and his money to the city of Greensboro….Just a real nice and generous individual and he used to own the Greensboro Professional baseball team back when they were connected with the Houston Astros for just about one season and that probably would make that timeframe back in 1969 and then professional baseball was gone for ten years before it returned to the Gate City in 1979….Mike Fleming supported youth sports and he was able to use his successful business, Fleming-Shaw Transfer and Storage as a way to support many of the city’s athletic ventures…Fleming-Shaw used to be located over off of East Wendover Avenue and then they later moved out near the Airport, in the Sandy Ridge Road section of the county…..

Mike Fleming took on what many feel was his largest and most enterprising venture ever when he donated the money/funds for the building of the Fleming Gymnasium on the UNCG campus and Mike Fleming could be seen at all of the UNCG basketball games for the men and women, even in his later years….

Just a real nice and professional person and his contributions to this city will be missed….RIP Mike Fleming and let’s hope they give you a few days off when you get to heaven and that you don’t have to start moving anybody’s belongings too soon after your arrive at Heaven’s Gate, on your way in from the Gate City….

RIP Mike Fleming and thanks for all you did for this area…..

  1. Another person that could speak on behalf of Mike Fleming would be former UNCG AD Nelson Bobb….

Nelson knew Mike Fleming as good as anybody around here and Mr. Bobb was on the job when Mike was reaching out and helping the Spartans….

  2. I HAD KNOWN MR. FLEMING FROM BACK IN THE 70’S.
IF HE EVER MET YOU ONCE HE NEVER FORGOT YOU.
DONE ALOT FOR THE CITY AND COUNTY IN MORE WAYS THAN SPORTS . GREAT HUMANITERIAN ALONG WITH HIS COMPANY
FLEMING SHAW TRANSFER AND THE SIMPSON BROTHERS MIKE AND DAVID.

  3. Mike was a men with a compassionate heart. We must also remember his contributions to the State of North Carolina as a member of the State Board of Transportation. He also gave to the City of Greensboro as a board member of the Chamber of Commerce and as a member of the Greensboro Civitan Club and Civitan Foundation. It will be hard for anyone to fill his shoes.
