Elon Men’s Soccer Heads to William & Mary for First CAA Road Match

ELON, N.C. – Fresh off its first match as a member of the Colonial Athletic Association, the Elon University men’s soccer team travels to Williamsburg, Va., for its first league road contest at William & Mary on Wednesday, Oct. 8. The Phoenix and the Tribe are scheduled to kickoff at 7 p.m. at Martin’s Family Stadium.

Series History
The Phoenix and the Tribe will square off for only the fifth time on Wednesday in a series that dates to 2007. Elon trails William & Mary 1-3 all-time with the lone victory coming in 2012 in Williamsburg in overtime. The Tribe won the most recent contest last season with a 1-0 victory over the maroon and gold in Elon.

Last Time Out
Elon fell in its CAA opener at home on Saturday, Oct. 4, against Hofstra by a score of 2-0. The loss was the third shutout and multi-goal loss for the Phoenix this season and the first setback at home on Elon’s home pitch at Rudd Field.

About Elon (4-4-2, 0-1 CAA)
Despite the setback on Saturday, Elon still ranks first in the league in fewest goals allowed with 10 on the year. The Phoenix also paces the CAA in shutouts with five after picking up a 1-0 clean sheet against High Point last Tuesday.

Elon holds a +12 overall advantage on shots over its opponents and has more attempts on frame than the opposition at 53-38. The Phoenix is shooting just over 47 percent in shots on goal while holding opposing teams to 38 percent.

James Brace currently leads the team in points with eight on his four goals, which is tied for third in the conference. The Hartlepool, England, native is also tied for third in the CAA in game-winning goals.

Goalkeeper Nathan Dean still ranks first in the conference in shutouts (five) and shutouts per game (0.50). The Liverpool, England, native has 21 career shutouts and needs one more to tie Clint Irwin for first all-time in school history in career clean sheets.

Scouting William & Mary (4-7-0, 1-1 CAA)
The Tribe went 1-1 last week after suffering a 3-1 setback at 10th-ranked Charlotte last Tuesday, but rebounded with a 3-1 victory over defending league champion Drexel on Saturday at home.

The Tribe is averaging 1.27 goals per match, tied for third in the conference, and is second overall in assists with 15. Seven players have contributed at least one goal this season with Chris Albiston leading the way with four.

In goal, Bennett Jones has played every minute between the posts and is second in the conference in saves with 39. He also has a save percentage of .722 and a GAA of 1.34.
