High School Football Saturday morning rewind:Stats, numbers and some controversy

From the Eastern Guilford-Northern Guilford game you had Jarius Morehead(Eastern Guilford) with two TD runs, with a long of 91 on the ground and he also had an interception….Cam Harris for Northern Guilford had two TD passes, one to Tucker Hord and one to Mook Reynolds and Harris had a TD run and played some defense too….

from Matt Krause with the Burlington Times News on last night’s Northern Guilford at Eastern Guilford game:
GIBSONVILLE — For much of Friday night at Tommy Grayson Field, Northern Guilford was held back by penalties and turnovers.

Then on the game’s most critical play, the script flipped. Thanks to a controversial two-point conversion, Northern Guilford topped Eastern Guilford 22-21 in Mid-State 3A Conference football.

Eastern Guilford (6-2 overall, 4-1 Mid-State 3-A Conference) led 21-7 going to the fourth quarter, but Northern Guilford mounted a rally. The Nighthawks scored a touchdown on a 1-yard quarterback keeper by Cam Harris with 5:52 to play, making the score 21-20.

When the teams lined up for the conversion, Eastern Guilford jumped offside. The penalty moved the ball inside the 2-yard line and prompted Northern Guilford coach Johnny Roscoe to go for two.

“We came to win,” Roscoe said. “That’s the whole thing. The players bought into it and I always do that.”

The two-point try was a handoff to running back C.J. Freeman. Freeman went up over the pile, but the ball popped free and Eastern Guilford recovered. The initial call was that Freeman did not cross the plane of the goal line, but after the officials huddled, the call was overturned.

The change gave the Nighthawks (7-1, 4-1) the margin needed for victory and sent Eastern coach Doug Robertson screaming onto the field.

“Side judge called it no good but the umpire overruled it and called it good,” Robertson said after the game. “End of story.”

From the PAGE-Grimsley game for the Pirates you had Pirate QB Dominick Britt with 106 yards passing and 64 yards on the ground…Javon Leake had 83 yards for the Pirates and Micah Gafford added 71…Gafford 2 TD’s and Leake with one…No doubt, no controversy here….(Harrison Kiser with 5 PAT kicks and two FG’s for Page.)

In that Smith-Southeast Guilford game, it looks like Bubba Craven was the man for SEG and Tyrell Dumpson for Smith…Craven with two TD passes to Greg Liggs and Craven with the game-winning TD run, while Dumpson connected on two Golden Eagle TD passes and he had a two-point run and you have to credit Myles White with 3 TD’s for Smith and Liggs with the two for SEG and give a big prop to ‘Big’ Desmond Sturdivant who took the ball back 37-40 yards on a fumble for a Smith score and this game was not without controversy either…..They had their share…

Josh Homol from Northwest Guilford with two TD passes for the Vikings and 215 through the air, with the two TD’s going to Thomas Hennigan and TH, for NWG, had 7 receptions for 102 yards….

Jamiel Mack, in the loss by High Point Central to NWG, had 222 yards passing with one TD by air and Mack added 54 yards rushing for the Bison, so on an off night, Mack still comes up with 276 yards…

NWG is now right in the thick of that Piedmont Triad 4-A race with East Forsyth….

More coming….

For the Southern Guilford Storm, you had two TD’s for Reggie Gallaspy and three big TD’s from Nijel Thomas and Storm QB Nathan Stoner threw the game-winner to Ron Hunt to help keep SG Unbeaten at (9-0) on the year…..Jake Hall with four touchdown receptions for Asheboro in the loss to SG and A’boro’s Shyheim tossed the 4 TD’s….

Big night for East Forsyth’s QB Karson Sharpe with 301 yards passing and 2 TD’s and Christian Beal ran for three EF Eagle scores…

No numbers on the Dudley Panthers, but their best number is the overall record of (7-0) on the season….Needs some Ragsdale numbers too, the Tigers posted 45 points and we may have to hit the HP Enterprise on this one…

For the High Point Andrews Red Raiders in their 25-22 loss to Randleman from the High Point Enterprise:
Travis Steele rushed for 127 yards and two TDs – including a 66-yard scoring run – to lead the Red Raiders (3-4, 1-1), who led all but the final 3 minutes, 57 seconds. D.J. Hill added 73 yards rushing, while Isaiah Kittrell also had a rushing TD.

From the Enterprise on Ragdale over Southwest Guilford:(Two TD passes by QB Alec Cobb from Ragdale and a TD run by Cobb…TD passes went to Tevin Quick and T.J. Parker)…
Quick finished with eight catches for 118 yards and Parker had five receptions for 82 yards. Cobb finished 16-for-25 with no interceptions and 227 yards. Javon Drayton, just a sophomore, led the Tiger rushing attack with 139 yards, including a 70-yard scoring run on Ragsdale’s first play of the fourth quarter that made it 45-7. Brandon Harris, a senior, rushed 15 times for 46 yards and scored on a 9-yarder midway through the third quarter. Parks, also a senior, rushed 12 times for 28 yards, including a score late in the third quarter that made the margin 38-7.

  1. It’s bad enough Northern blatantly cheats and recruits players from out of their district. Now the refs are giving them games. It’s a rigged deck. The fix is in. But it won’t matter when the rules finally catch up with Northern and they’ll have to vacate wins.

  2. I don’t know Bobby, you have been saying this for a while now.

You might want to go back and check your vapes.

  3. I don’t see how they let football coaches yell and cuss at the refs like roscoe and the eastern coach did. In baseball, both coaches would’ve been ejected. Northern had a couple dirty personal foul penalties too

  4. Not everything we see here is relevant….You can believe less than half of what you see and even less of what you hear…

In other words we are seeing a lot that did not really happen so you have to take much of this like it is grain of salt and just move on….So much speculation and everyone has a different point of view and there are tons of different viewpoints…Got to keep moving on…

    Next Up???

  5. Eastern parents: watch the video of the game on wfmy 2. You’ll clearly see freeman cross the goal line before the ball comes out. Instead of crying about the refs why don’t you congratulate the Eastern Guilford players on an outstanding game they played. This is the best team Eastern has put on the field in years. They have a chance to go deep in the playoffs. I guess, like so many other schools around here, your season is successful if you can beat Northern.

  7. After Roscoes meeting with the refs at halftime things seem to go his way the second half. Unbelievable I don’t understand your comment should Eastern be happy we lost a close game to Northern and everybody else fall in line behind Northern every year. We were cheated out of a win by the refs. The last time I checked High School doesn’t have replay reviews but it seems that when it comes to Northern you are forced to play by different rules. I am still looking for who was off sides on the play before the missed two point conversion. Northern can hold their heads high because they are still the most disliked school and sports teams in the triad if not the whole state and not because they win but because of how they win!

  8. Accusations of cheating are pretty serious. I happen to know that most all of those Northern boys are good, solid young men of character. Proof in the community, grades, churches and on the field. There may be a couple who have an attitude but that is not the norm. As for Eastern, so I heard that most of the JV players were benched on Thursday night because of bad conduct and grades. Do I think that is indicative of all the players on the Eastern football team? No, but I could sure jump to that conclusion. Come on Man! Eastern played very good. A great surprise in the conference this year. Northern earned that two point conversion, nobody “gave it to them” and the refs knew it was the right thing to do. Don’t be a sore looser. We wish you luck in the playoffs.

  9. @wildcat fan look at the film buddy! The two point conversion was clearly good. I really don’t think we were watching the same game if you think the refs were on northerns side. Every call except for the 2 pt conversion call (which was clearly te correct call if you watch the film) was In favor of eastern. Northern battled the refs the whole night. Eastern played a great game and has a lot to be proud of. I don’t understand all the sore losers coming up with excuses
