College Men’s Soccer Final – Guilford 1, Shenandoah 1

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College and Shenandoah University earned a physical Saturday evening Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) draw, 1-1.

Shenandoah had multiple scoring opportunities in the first half that went wide of the net before the Quakers responded in the latter stage of the period with offensive chances of their own.

The Quakers dominated the second half shot count, 15-2, but converted in the 81st minute when Colin Dillon bending a ball off of a 30-yard free kick to put the Quakers on the board, 1-0.

The second half featured a majority of the match’s fouls as the Hornets led the second period’s foul total, 10-6, with both sides being issued red cards that forced both teams to play one man down for the final 27:53 of the contest. In the final minutes of regulation, Shenandoah’s Jonathan Mitchell fired a long cross to Brian Maye inside the box to level the score with 2:37 left in the second half.

Both teams looked for opportunities in the overtime periods, including multiple shots that were just wide of the net, but neither team could find the game winner.

The Quakers outshot the Hornets, 31-10, and held a strong corner kick edge, 11-1. Guilford held the advantage in fouls, 16-11, with each side accumulating two yellow cards and one red card in the physical contest.

Marko Mandalinic made three saves in net for the Quakers. Shenandoah’s Matthew Poell stopped seven shots minding the net.

The Quakers (4-9-2, 3-3-2 ODAC) return to action Wednesday, hosting Emory & Henry College for a 7 p.m. ODAC contest on Guilford’s Senior Day.
