BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Sophomore Sarah Bae shot 220 (70-72-78) to claim her first individual medal of the season with a win at the Fighting Camel Classic on Tuesday in Buies Creek, North Carolina. High Point shot 308 in the final round and finished in second out of nine teams with a total score of 908 (300-300-308).

“I am really happy that the girls showed fight today and pulled through some difficult moments,” head coach Vici Pate Flesher said. “Sarah and Tan were truly an inspiration today. Both were able to battle through some adversity and posted good results. I think we had a moment of impasse after eight or nine holes, but everyone hung in there and because of that we were able to finish second.”

Bae entered the final round of the Fighting Camel Classic with a two-under 140 and shot a 78 on Tuesday. The sophomore had two birdies on the day and finished one-stroke ahead of teammate Tan Cheeranont and Campbell’s Lisbeth Brooks and Nadine White.

The win was the first of the 2014-15 season for Bae and the third of her career. The win moves the sophomore into a tie with former Panther Kate O’Sullivan for the most tournament wins in the history of HPU women’s golf.

Cheeranont had High Point’s top round of the day on Tuesday with a two-over 74 to move into a tie for second with a total score of 221 (74-73-74). Cheeranont had three birdies in the round to move up from fourth. The finish is the best in Cheeranont’s HPU career.

Sophomore Danielle Fuss struggled on Tuesday, carding an 84 to finish in 30th with a total score of 236 (77-75-84). Freshman Cayla Smith posted her best round of the tournament with a 77 to move into 31st with a score of 237 (80-80-77) while junior Casey Ward shot a 79 and finished in a tie for 39th with a 54-hole score of 242 (79-84-79). Senior Grier Bennett competed as an individual and finished tied with Ward in 39th with a score of 242 (82-77-83).

The second-place finish by High Point is its best of the 2014-15 season. The Panthers trimmed 10 shots off their score from last season at the Fighting Camel Classic to post their second top-five finish in four fall tournaments.

Host Campbell claimed the team win with a three-round combined score of 895 (296-297-302). The Camels had the low score in each of the three rounds of the tournament. Nova Southeastern finished in third with a score of 910 while Old Dominion posted a score of 911 to finish fourth. Toledo rounded out the top five with a score of 916.

The Fighting Camel Classic marks the end of the fall season for the Panthers.
