GC Men’s Soccer Defeats Ferrum 2-1 in First Round Match

GREENSBORO, NC – The #1 seed Greensboro College upended #8 seed Ferrum College by a 2-1 margin on Saturday evening. With the victory, the Pride also move their winning streak to eight game in a row.

The Pride got on the board just before halftime when Warren Washington played a through ball that Marco Figueroa ran onto and beat the keeper with two minutes remaining. Both teams had six shots apiece in the half but the Pride held a 5-2 edge on corners.

In the 71st minute Greensboro struck again when Shaun Watt laid a ball off to George Dimopoulos who rocketed a shot past the Ferrum keeper extending their lead to 2-0. The Panthers got a goal back with three seconds remaining in the contest, but came up short losing 2-1.

Greensboro held a 22-11 advantage on shots with an 8-6 edge on frame. The Pride also had a 8-3 margin on corner kicks. Craig Gage led the way with five shots while Washington and Dimopoulos had three shots apiece. Robbie Barnes and Figueroa contributed two shots on the night as well.

Logan Rohde picked up his 12th win of the season in goal making five saves.

The Pride now move to 12-6 overall with the victory today. The number #1 seed Greensboro College will now play #5 seed Maryville College on Friday November 7th in the first semi final contest of the day. The game will take place in Martinsville, VA at the Smith River Sports Complex. Kickoff time is set for 12:00 p.m.

In their previous meeting this year, Greensboro went on the road to defeat Maryville 1-0. Washington scored in the 35th minute off an assist by Asa Britten.
