NCHSAA Girl’s Dual Team Tennis Championships

PANTHER CREEK, CARDINAL GIBBONS, LAKE NORMAN CHARTER, BISHOP MCGUINNESS WIN NCHSAA WOMEN’S DUAL TEAM TENNIS

Four championships were held at two different locations in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state women’s dual team tennis championships Saturday, as inclement weather forced the finals indoors.

At the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center in Greensboro, Cary Panther Creek captured the 4-A crown and Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons won the 3-A. At the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center at N.C. State, Kernersville Bishop McGuinness rolled to the 1-A title and Lake Norman Charter earned the 2-A championship.

In Greensboro, the battle of unbeatens at the 4-A level saw Panther Creek sweep Charlotte Myers Park 5-0. Sammi Smith and Jordan Strickland won their singles matches for Panther Creek and then teamed to win the number one doubles for the clinching point. Smith was selected as the match MVP.

Panther Creek finished 21-0 overall while Myers Park ended 16-1.

Gibbons had little trouble in rolling past Asheville 5-1. Asheville’s Adrienne Haynes, the state 4-A singles champ, won at number one but the Crusaders swept the rest of the singles events.

Lizzie Galush of Gibbons, the number-two singles winner, was the match MVP. The Crusaders ended with a 28-0 record and won the state championship for the third time in four years. Asheville wound up 17-2.

In the 1-A final, Bishop McGuinness rolled to an easy triumph over Durham Voyager Academy 5-0, losing only six games in the five singles matches that were completed.

Bishop, which finished 14-1 overall and won its second NCHSAA women’s dual team title, got a 6-0, 6-1 victory at number-one by Morgan Auger, who won the state 1-A singles championship last weekend. Auger was the match MVP.

Voyager finished at 10-7 overall.

The 2-A match was also a battle of undefeated teams, with Lake Norman Charter winning four of six singles matches and then clinching at number-one doubles for a 5-2 win.

Hannah and Olivia Archer each won their singles matches and then combined for a 10-0 win in the number-one doubles for Lake Norman Charter, which finished 17-0.

Lauren Loveless, the number-five singles player for LNC who won a tiebreaker to win her match and give her team a 4-2 lead, was named the MVP.

Lake Norman Charter was in its first NCHSAA dual team tennis final while NCSSM has been to the championship seven times, with three championships, in the last eight years in two different classifications. Science and Math ended the year at 12-1.
