College Women’s Basketball Final – Guilford 56, Meredith 48 (With Guilford Classic All-Tournament Team)

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College rallied from a first-half deficit to claim a Sunday afternoon victory in day two of the Guilford College Classic over Meredith College, 56-48.

The Avenging Angels held an eight-point lead, 23-15, for their largest lead of the game 13 minutes into the first half before Guilford erased the deficit towards the end of the period, claiming a slim lead thanks to a 12-1 run over five minutes. Meredith answered with a pair of baskets in the final minute to go into halftime with a one-point lead.

Guilford answered with seven straight points to start the second half of play before Meredith countered with five points. The Quakers followed by producing a 10-0 run in the next 5:24 to create distance from the Avenging Angels. The Quakers claimed their largest lead of 11 points in the final minute to seal the victory.

Anais Weatherly (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mount Tabor) produced her second straight double-double in as many contests, finishing the afternoon with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Brittany Drew (Greensboro, N.C./Page) finished the contest as the only other Quaker in double-figure scoring, totaling 12 points.

Meredith’s Kim Hinton amassed 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting as the Avenging Angels shot 52.7% from the field in the first half, compared to 33.3% from Guilford. The Quakers shot 32.2% from the field for the contest, but turned 23 Avenging Angels turnovers into 21 points. Meredith used 17 Quaker turnovers to produce 13 points.

Guilford won the rebounding battle, out-rebounding Meredith, 39-28. The Quakers amassed 20 offensive rebounds that produced 11 points.

Guilford finished the Guilford College Classic 1-1 while Roanoke College finished the weekend undefeated after earning a victory over Christopher Newport University, 74-62, earlier in the afternoon. Tournament M.V.P. Tatum McKee led Roanoke with 18 points and eight rebounds while Kelsey Smith also added 18 points. Christopher Newport’s Camry Green led the Captains with 17 points and 11 rebounds.

The Quakers return to action Thursday, hosting Salem College for a 7 p.m. contest inside Ragan-Brown Field House.
