GREENSBORO, N.C. – Matt McCarthy drained six three-pointers and scored 20 points in Guilford College’s 76-65 basketball victory at Greensboro College Wednesday.

McCarthy and his mates were unaffected by the raucous pro-Greensboro crowd in the cozy confines of the Pride’s Hanes Gymnasium. McCarthy knocked down three trifectas in the first half and Jonny Rice tossed in 12 of his 14 points in the opening period, which staked Guilford (3-0) to a 41-32 halftime lead. McCarthy’s three-pointers five minutes into the game gave Guilford the lead for good.

McCarthy’s final three came with 10:44 left in the game and opened a 63-43 Quakers’ edge. Greensboro gradually chipped away and rallied to within 73-65 with just under two minutes remaining. The Quakers held Greensboro scoreless the rest of the way to preserve the victory.

Guilford shot 10-for-22 (45.5 %) from beyond the arc and placed three students in double-figure scoring. Trever Hyatt knocked down two triples and netted 14 points. Rice paced Guilford’s rebounders with seven.

Greensboro’s Devan Gregory led all scorers with 27 points, 17 in the first half.
Guilford visits Emory University Saturday (11/22) for a 4:00 p.m. contest.
