Elon Women’s Basketball Signs McDonald for 2015-16 Season

ELON, N.C. – Head Elon women’s basketball coach Charlotte Smith has announced that Nikki McDonald (Atlanta/Wesleyan School) has signed a national letter of intent to join the Phoenix program for the 2015-16 season.

“We are excited to welcome Nikki to our Elon family,” said Elon head coach Charlotte Smith. “She embodies the values of academic excellence, which will make her an outstanding student, and she is also a tremendous basketball player from an outstanding high school program. Nikki has good basketball IQ and is a good shooter who can light it up beyond the arc. She will be an exciting player to watch.”

McDonald, a 6-0 shooting guard, averaged 14.2 points, 8.1 rebounds and three steals per game for Wesleyan during her junior season. A team captain as a senior this year, she has earned Gwinnett Daily Post all-county preseason first team honors and is a Super Six selection.

During the 2014 season, McDonald helped the team to a 2AA state runner-up finish and was named first team all-state and all-metro by the Atlanta Journal Constitution, first team all-county by the Gwinnett Daily Post, second team all-state by the Georgia Sports Writers Association, third team all-metro by the Atlanta Tip Off Club and earned a spot on the 2014 all-region team. She helped the team to regional tournament and state championships in both 2012 and 2013. McDonald was named Wesleyan’s Rookie of the Year as a freshman and was selected to participate at the Nike Skills Academy her sophomore year.

Outside of basketball, McDonald also finished first as a sophomore and second as a junior in state qualifying for the shot put and discus. As a freshman, she helped led the volleyball team to the final four.

A native of Atlanta, Alexandria Nikia McDonald (Nikki), is the daughter of Liz Clark.
