NCCSIA Announces 2014 North Carolina College Division All-State Women’s Soccer Teams

The North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) announced its selections for the 2014 College Division All-State Women’s Soccer team on Monday. Twenty-two players representing eight different North Carolina Colleges and Universities were selected to the first and second teams.

Wingate led the way with four selections to the first team, while Lenoir-Rhyne, Meredith and Salem each had two players named to the first team. UNC Pembroke rounded out the first team with one selection.

Wingate’s goalie Ashlyn Hardie earned her second selection to the NCCSIA first team. Hardie recorded 1674 minutes between the posts and led the Bulldogs to a second consecutive South Atlantic Conference (SAC) title. She recorded her 13th shutout in round one of the NCAA tournament. With just nine goals scored against Hardie this season, she posted a 0.50 goals against average and earned NSCAA National Player of the Week honors this month.

Wingate’s Macy Franklin, Lenoir-Rhyne’s Brianna Belsky and Meredith’s Anna Smither top the All-State honors in the backfield. Franklin earned her second All-SAC defender honor this season and led Wingate to a league-best 0.56 goals-against-average.

Belsky anchored a back line that limited its opponents to just 22 goals in 21 matches, including eight shutouts, and earned her second All-State honor. She helped Lenoir-Rhyne to a SAC Regular Season Championship and a season ranked No. 20 in the NCAA Division II.

Smither led Meredith to a USA South Regular Season title and earned All-Tournament and All-Conference first team honors. She recorded a pair of goals and one assist along the way.

The midfielders are led by Meredith’s Danielle Lee and Lenoir-Rhyne’s Garcelle Alequine, who both return to the NCCSIA All-State honor board. A third-time All-State selection, Lee posted the USA South’s second-best record with 11 assists and capped off her four-time All-Conference career with first team honors.

Alequine led the Bears with 14 goals scored and six assists for 34 total points and was recognized as a SAC offensive leader. This marks Alequine’s second All-State honor.

UNC Pembroke’s Amber Watkins and Salem’s Taylor Norman round-out the midfield first team selections. Watkins ranked second in the Peach Belt Conference with 10 assists and registered a career-high six goals. Norman led Salem to the Spirit’s second Great South Atlantic Conference title with nine goals and five assists.

Anchoring the forwards is four-time All-State selection Jade Montgomery. The Wingate senior was named the first-ever three-time SAC Player of the Year, and she earned her second All-Region Player of the year as well. Montgomery led the SAC with 15 goals and 36 points this season and ranks fourth on the league’s all-time list in both categories.

Montgomery’s teammate Brooke Howell and Salem’s Sawyer Ferguson round-out the 2014 All-State forward selections. Howell ranked tied for second in the SAC with 14 goals and third with 33 points and earned All-Conference first team honors.

A second-time All-State recipient, Ferguson ranked second in the GSAC with 13 goals and 32 points and was named an All-Conference first team selection.

The NCCSIA All-State second team is comprised of Barton College’s Lane Brooks, Emily Futral and Carson Moore, UNC Pembroke’s Michelle Brown, Rae-Shawn Campbell and Savannah Stiles, Belmont Abbey College’s Jillian Lang and Meghan Philp, Pfeiffer University’s Kaitlin Sampson, Wingate University’s Kaitlyn Brunworth, and Meredith College’s Meredith McCarty.

Nominees were submitted by North Carolina sports information professionals and voted on by the NCCSIA members.
