GC Pride Men’s Basketball Hold On Late To Top Wesley 81-76

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – The Greensboro College Pride men’s basketball team opened play at the 2014 Roger Taylor Invitational hosted by North Carolina Wesleyan on Saturday evening. The Pride took on the Wolverines of Wesley College and came away with an 81-76 victory.

Greensboro College jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, but the Wolves were able to come back taking their first lead of the game at 8-4 following an 8-0 run. The Pride was able to keep climbing back into the game over the next five minutes, tying the game at 13-13 following a Raheem Martin jump shot with 13:36 to play in the first half.

The two teams traded baskets over the next six minutes of play before Greensboro faced their largest deficit of the game at 27-21. Once the Pride fell behind by the six point margin, they were able to use a 12-5 run to regain the lead at 33-32 with two minutes to play until the intermission period.

Raheem Martin and Joseph Gatling got the first four points of the run for Greensboro before Brandon Passcucci gave the Pride the lead following two long range shots. Over the course of the final two minutes in the opening frame, Greensboro was able to extend their margin to 39-35 heading into the break.

The Pride then opened the second half of play on a 9-3 run extending their lead to 48-40. Devan Gregory tickled the bottom of the net from three point range to get the run started before Simeon Howard contributed the final five points.

Greensboro College was able to maintain their lead until the ten minute mark when Wesley tied the game at 52-52.

Raheem Martin and Edric Roberts then put the Pride on their back combining for 16 points down the stretch giving the Pride the 81-76 victory.

Greensboro College shot just under 48 percent from the field in the game, and had four different players score in double figures.

Raheem Martin led the way for Greensboro with 19 points on 6 of 8 shooting while Simeon Howard chipped in 16 points and a team high 12 rebounds. Chris Corbin and Devan Gregory also contributed 12 and 13 points respectively. Hamilton Hawkins led the way for Greensboro recording five of the team’s 11 assists in the contest.

The Pride also held a 40-35 advantage in the rebound category with 28 of them coming on the offensive end of the court resulting in 16 points.

With the victory over the Wolverines, Greensboro College improves their overall record to 2-2 on the season. The Pride men will wrap up their play at the Roger Taylor Invitational on Sunday afternoon when they square off against Maryland Bible College. The game is slated to get underway in Rocky Mount at 2:00 PM.
