Chapel Hill, Weddington Athletes Earn Performance Of Week

CHAPEL HILL—Connor Stough of Chapel Hill and Stephanie Watts of Weddington have been named winners of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Performance of the Week awards, powered by Time Warner Cable SportsChannel with Subway® Restaurants.

Each week one male and one female athlete in NCHSAA competition are selected for this award from nominations received from media and school administrators.

Stough, quarterback for the Chapel Hill football team, helped to engineer a stunning upset as the Tigers knocked off Southern Durham, the defending state 3-AA football champions, by 39-28 and snapped the Spartans’ winning streak at 27 consecutive games. Stough completed 24 of 44 passes for 291 yards and two touchdowns as Chapel Hill pulled the shocker and advanced to the state semifinals.

Watts had a terrific performance for the Weddington women’s basketball team in the Charlotte Hoops Challenge. Although Weddington dropped a 76-55 decision to undefeated Charlotte Myers Park, Watts was practically unstoppable. She poured in 34 points, including 25 in the first half, and knocked in five three-pointers. Weddington trailed by just four at halftime but couldn’t keep pace.

TWC SportsChannel typically announces the winners of the awards during their Tuesday night SportsNight show and will recognize the winners throughout the week. Weekly recipients are also recognized via Twitter and Facebook.
