Records Fall As GC Pride WBB Cruise to 92-60 Victory

, the Pride women’s basketball team sailed past Johnson & Wales 92-60 on Monday night. Spires set the Greensboro College single game record with 14 assists while Stephens broke the single game record for blocks in a single game with 7.

Greensboro College fell behind early in the first half and trailed by four points at 19-15 halfway through the first period of play. After falling behind by the four point margin, the Pride then went on a tear running off 13 unanswered points to take a 28-19 lead with 7:31 to play in the opening frame.

Kamerin Williams got the run started from the charity stripe followed by two straight baskets by Shanita Hampton. At the end of the run, Hampton recorded her third basket before Vontreece Hayes capped off the run with her first basket of the day.

Over the final six minutes of the half, Greensboro College was able to keep a ten point margin before Kamia Strickland drained a 30 foot jumper at the buzzer to put the Pride on top 43-30 heading into the intermission.

In the second half of play, Greensboro College took their largest lead of the game at 86-50 and was able to cruise to a 92-60 win.

“This was one of our best all-around games of the year so far,” Greensboro College Head Women’s Basketball Coach Randy Tuggle said. “This was a total team win tonight, and we have to continue to do this as the season goes along to come away with victories.”

Spires 14 assists broke a Pride record that had stood strong since 2006 when Staci Humphrey passed for 13 assists against Peace College. The previous Greensboro College block record was set in 2010 by Jordan Joyce against the Hornets of Shenandoah University with six.

Shanita Hampton led the way for the Pride with 15 points on 7 of 13 shooting. Kamia Strickland was not far behind Hampton going a perfect four of four from behind the arch for 12 points. Syerra Troutman, Azha McNeil, and Kamerin Williams also recorded double figures scoring.

Greensboro College out rebounded the Wildcats 59-51 with 27 of the Pride’s rebounds coming off the offensive glass resulting in 27 points. Stephens led the way with 10 boards while Williams recorded seven. Alexis Hite and Azha McNeil also added five rebounds apiece.

With the win, the Pride women move their overall record to 5-0 on the season. Greensboro College will be back in action on Thursday night when they travel across town to take on the Quakers of Guilford College. The game is set to get underway at 7:00 PM.
