Women’s College Basketball Final – Guilford 72, Averett 57

DANVILLE, Va. – Anais Weatherly (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mount Tabor) led all scorers with 21 points as Guilford College claimed a Tuesday evening victory over Averett University, 72-57.

Averett held a small lead six minutes into the first half before the Quakers amassed an 11-point lead with 7:15 left in the period. Averett cut the deficit to five before the Quakers entered the locker room with an eight-point advantage. Six minutes into the second frame, Guilford distanced themselves from the Cougars to amass their largest lead of the game, 21 points. Averett cut the lead to 13 points with four minutes left, but the Quakers continued to extend the advantage going forth to the end of the half.

Weatherly added seven rebounds and three steals to her 21-point effort, her third game with over 20 points in six contests. Kali Cuttaia (Eden, N.C/Morehead/Univ. of Charleston (W. Va.)) notched her first double-double effort as a Quaker, totaling ten points and ten rebounds in addition to three steals. Jennette Taylor was the remaining Quaker in double-figure scoring with 12 points.

Averett’s Samm Chandler led the Cougars with 13 points and eight rebounds. Frida Lundquist was the remaining Cougar in double-figure scoring, coming off the bench to score 11 points.

Guilford shot 44.6 percent for the game, including a 48.6 percent effort in the second half. Averett shot 37.1 percent, improving on that percentage in the second half by shooting 41.4 percent.

The Quakers earned a decisive advantage on the glass, out-rebounding Averett, 52-34, including 20 Quaker offensive rebounds. Guilford held the edge in second chance points, 15-11. The Quakers also dominated inside offensively, earning the advantage in points-in-the-paint, 46-26.

The Quakers (5-1, 1-0 ODAC) return to action Thursday, hosting cross-town rival Greensboro College in a 7 p.m. game inside Ragan-Brown Field House.
