Elon MBB Reaches Century Mark in Blowout Win Over VUL

ELON, N.C. – Five players scored in double figures as the Elon University men’s basketball team routed the visiting Virginia University of Lynchburg Dragons 111-55 on Tuesday, Dec. 2, at Alumni Gym.

Elon (4-3) led for all 40 minutes in the victory, as Kevin Blake took the opening tip in for a thunderous dunk without taking a dribble to give the Phoenix an advantage it would not relinquish.

Every player in uniform tonight scored at least two points in the win, as the Phoenix bench scored a total of 53 points.

Tonight’s 56-point margin of victory marks Elon’s largest under head coach Matt Matheny.

“We got a lot out of tonight,” said Matheny. “I was really happy with the way we competed for 40 minutes because these games are not easy to do that. Everybody on our roster played with energy and effort every minute they were on the floor, so I was very encouraged by that.”

Christian Hairston recorded his first career double-double with 14 points and 11 boards. Tanner Samson pitched in a game-high 17 points, while reigning CAA Rookie of the Week Elijah Bryant ended the evening with 15 points on 6-of-13 shooting to go along with four assists. Ryan Winters nearly missed a double-double with 11 points and nine boards while Dmitri Thompson finished with 10 points and eight rebounds.

Elon dominated the paint, outrebounding the Dragons, 67-31. Tonight marked only the second time since 2005 the Phoenix hauled down 60+ rebounds in a game.

Tonight marked the 60th time in school history Elon scored 100 or more points in a game. The last time the Phoenix reached the century mark was a 126-78 blowout against Central Pennsylvania last season. Elon hosts the Knights this Sunday, Dec. 7, at 2 p.m.
