The Cowboys hosted the Whirlies of Grimsley High School tonight. Both teams came into tonight’s contest unbeaten on the year and were looking to give each other their first loss on the season. The Cowboys are coming off back to back victories this week over Andrews and Page, while the Whirlies were fresh having not played a game since last Friday night, a victory over Western Guilford. Who’s winning streak would end tonight?
The Whirlies scored first, but the Cowboys responded with 5 quick points. The Whirlies responded with a couple baskets, but the Cowboys held the momentum and the lead for the quarter which ended 20-13.
The second stanza was a back and forth affair that was nearly the mirror opposite of the first, with the visitors taking momentum of the frame, outscoring the Cowboys, 24-16, until a KJ Langley 3 just before the buzzer gave the lead and mojo back to the Cowboys at 39-37 headed into the break.
The second half opened with the teams trading baskets the first 2 and a half minutes. But the Cowboys started putting together baskets and defensive stops to push the lead out and get a firm hold on the game closing the third quarter out at 61-48.
The final quarter showed the strength of the Cowboys as they used speed and great ball pressure to control the game throughout the close until the Whirlies put a few baskets together in the closing minutes to get the final tally at 82-66.
It was a very good team win by the Cowboys pushing them to 7-0 on the year and dropping Grimsley to 5-1. The Whirlies were led by John Puryear with 25. The Cowboys were led by Kaymon Mitchell with 27, 13 Rebs, and KJ Langley with 21, 4 Asts, 2 Rebs, and 2 Stls, and Kam Langley with 16, 5 Asts, 5 Rebs, and 3 Steals. Brenden Austin provided a great defensive spark for the Cowboys as well.
Southwest next will face off against city rival High Point Central on Tuesday over at High Point University.
