First Semester Update/Wrap-up on GTCC Women’s Basketball with Allen(Smith), Lozada(WG), Smith(WG), Kelly(SA), Moore(RC) and Jackson(EG):Locals leading and living large

The Women’s Basketball team from Guilford Technical Community College wrapped up an eventful 1st semester of action this week by defeating Division I the Community College of Baltimore at Dundalk by a score of 72 – 56.

The Titans finish the semester with a record of 10 – 2 and ranked #11 in the NJCAA DII National Poll. Both of the Titans losses came in non-league action on the road against Division I opponents in close games. The Titans lost by 1 point and in the other tilt was down just 2 points with a minute to go. Much more importantly the Titans are a perfect 6 – 0 and sit atlone atop the Virginia-Carolina’s Conference.

The Titans have been led mostly by several local standouts. Nyla Allen (Smith HS) has been the Titans best player so far. Ms. Allen was the National Player of the Week in November after having a few huge games. Nyla finished the semester averging 17.8 ppg and 12.3 rpg. Also playing well for the Titans are a pair of Western Guilford graduates, starting center Selena Lozada and point guard Letricia Smith. Lozada is averaging a double double with 11.2 ppg and 10 rpg and Smith is among the national leaders in assists per game at just under 7 per tilt. Also playing well for the Titans is sophomore Marcianna Munn (Fayetteville 71st) who is 2nd on the team at 12.3 ppg and 4.1 apg.

Other local players who have contributed to the Titan’s success are April Kelly (Southern Alamance), Mikayla Moore (Rockingham Co), Karima Jackson (Eastern Guilford), and Tierra Lester (Asheboro).

The Titans are off until January 8th when the open up the second semester with a tilt against Bryant & Stratton.
