The opening day of action in the Sheetz Holiday Classic concluded with a non-bracketed matchup of the Greyhounds of North Surry and the Cowboys of Southwest Guilford. The Cowboys jumped out 24-0 by the 4:10 mark, but the Greyhounds refused to just quit. They visitors took advantage of a sloppy end to the first quarter with a 10-0 to put the score at 34-18.
The run continued as the second quarter began getting it to 35-25. The Cowboys seemed to regain semblance of control as the half concluded at 50-39.
The second half belonged to the Greyhounds as they out executed a Cowboys team. The third quarter ended at 64-53 in favor of the Cowboys, but the scrappy visitors went on another long run (18-3) to tie the game at 75 with 1:47 to play. After only converting 1 free throw, North Surry took the lead on a 3 pointer to make it 78-76 with 1:20 to play. The Cowboys were able to turnover the Greyhounds a couple more times, and even tied the game at 78 on a pair of late free-throws with 37 seconds to play. On their ensuing possession, the Greyhounds were able to convert and score a basket with 22 seconds left. The Cowboys came down and were unable to convert a contested layup. A quick steal following a frantic scramble gave the the Cowboys one more chance but the ball was bobbled and fell harmlessly out of bounds.
The Cowboys drop their second straight game to the tune of 80-78. North Surry was led by Trevon Simmons with 24. Southwest was led by Kaymon Mitchell with 23, 6 Rebs, 3 Asts, KJ Langley with 18, 4 Stls, 2 Rebs, and Kameron Langley with 14, 7 Stls, 3 Asts, and 2 Rebs.
