College Men’s Basketball Final – Catholic 79, Guilford 47

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Tournament Most Valuable Player Bryson Fonville (Greensboro, N.C./Page) scored a game-high 23 points to lead host Catholic University of America to a 79-47 victory over Guilford College Tuesday night in the Cardinals’ College Park Holiday Inn Basketball Classic final.

Fonville, a junior point guard, also contributed five rebounds, five assists and three steals to Catholic’s (8-3) eighth win in 10 games. Fonville netted 17 second-half points, which helped the Cardinals outscore the Quakers (7-3), 45-25 in the frame. Fellow all-tournament selection Kyle Phanord tallied 11 points and five assists for Catholic, which outrebounded Guilford, 40-28, and enjoyed a 44-17 edge in free-throw attempts. Jay Howard added 16 points and a game-best nine boards.

The setback overshadowed the milestone Guilford’s Matt McCarthy (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) reached playing before a smattering of hometown fans. With a first-half free throw, the senior guard became the 32nd Guilford men’s basketball player to score 1,000 career points. He finished with eight points in the game and now has 1,007 career markers.

Senior Jonny Rice (Fayetteville, N.C./Terry Sanford (Washington and Lee)) led the Quakers with 11 points and six rebounds. Freshman Brandon Staves (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville Road), who scored eight points off the bench, represented Guilford on the all-tournament team.

Coach Tom Palombo’s club returns home to host Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) rival Emory & Henry Saturday (1/3) at 3:00 p.m.
