CAA Names Johnson WBB Rookie of the Week

RICHMOND, Va. – The Colonial Athletic Association announced today, Jan. 5, that Elon women’s basketball’s Malaya Johnson has been named the Rookie of the Week. This marks the second time Johnson has earned the honor this season.

Johnson led the Phoenix in the team’s three wins last week after scoring 10+ points in each outing. Johnson went 17-of-26 from the field to shoot 65 percent on the week, averaging 13.7 points and seven rebounds per game. The rookie also went 7-of-11 from the charity stripe (64 percent) and tallied six blocks, six steals and three assists.

In a win over Furman, she posted her first career double-double with 13 points and a career-high 11 boards, while hitting 3-of-5 from the line. Against Lenoir-Rhyne, Johnson led the team with 18 points off a 7-of-8 performance (88 percent) and fell just short of the double-double with eight rebound. She also went 4-of-6 from the free-throw line and recording three blocks and two steals, both career highs. Johnson notched 10 points in the team’s CAA debut and win at Delaware after shooting 71 percent and recorded two steals.

Johnson and the team host its first CAA home game on Tuesday, Jan. 6, against Drexel in Alumni Gym for a 7 p.m. tip.
