College Men’s Basketball Final – Randolph-Macon 72, Guilford 54

ASHLAND, Va. – Randolph-Macon College’s Marcus Badger scored a team-high 19-points as Guilford College dropped a Saturday afternoon Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) contest to Randolph-Macon, 72-54. The Yellow Jackets entered the week ranked 16th in the recent D3hoops.com Top 25 poll.

The Quakers (9-4, 2-2 ODAC) held a lead for most of the first 17:44 of the contest, claiming their largest lead of six points 4:48 into the contest. The Yellow Jackets captured the lead late in the frame by producing a 12-1 run to close out the period thanks to three made baskets from beyond the arc in a 1:34 span. Randolph-Macon extended their lead into double digits to start the second half, growing their lead as large as 21 late in the period.

Matt McCarthy led Guilford scorers with 12 points on 4-of-13 shooting, with all points earned from three-point range. Hunter Jackson (Sanford, N.C./Lee County) came off the bench to total 10 points, shooting 4-of-7 from the field. Will Freeman rounded out Guilford’s double-figure scoring efforts, scoring 10 points off the bench on 5-of-6 shooting.

Badger’s 19 points came on 7-of-9 shooting, accounting for five of Randolph-Macon’s 15 three-point field goals. Badger also added seven assists. Akeem Holmes powered Randolph-Macon’s offense off the bench, scoring 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting.

The Quakers shot 35 percent for the contest, including 8-of-24 (33.3 percent) from three-point range. Randolph-Macon shot 49.1 percent from the field and 46.9 percent from beyond the arc, where the Yellow Jackets produced the majority of their offense.

The Quakers out-rebouned the Yellow Jackets, 41-30, while holding a decisive advantage in second chance points, 15-3. Randolph-Macon produced 10 points off 18 Quaker turnovers while Guilford produced nine points off 11 Yellow Jacket miscues. Both sides used their bench for a significant portion of their offense, with Randolph-Macon holding the edge in bench scoring, 38-24.

The Quakers return to action Wednesday, hosting Lynchburg College in a 7:30 p.m. ODAC contest inside Ragan-Brown Field House.
