College Women’s Basketball Final – Guilford 62, Shenandoah 41

WINCHESTER, Va. – Guilford College extended their lead as large as 23 points in route to a Saturday afternoon Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win over Shenandoah University, 62-41.

The Quakers jumped out to an 8-0 lead over the first 4:35 of the contest and never relinquished the advantage. Shenandoah kept the contest tight through most of the first half, limiting the Quaker lead to eight points, and cut the Hornet deficit to as low as four, but Guilford earned their first double-digit lead with 1:12 left in the first half. Guilford opened the first 5:20 of the second half on a 12-2 run, creating an 18 point lead. The Quakers extended their lead through the final period, reaching their largest lead (23 points) with 1:39 left.

Lauren Ramsey (Lexington, N.C/North Davidson) lead the Quakers with 12 points and seven rebounds on 6-of-9 shooting. Kali Cuttaia (Eden, N.C./Morehead/Univ. of Charleston (W. Va.)) produced a solid effort with 10 points, six rebounds, and six assists, shooting 5-of-10 from the field. Anais Weatherly (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mount Tabor) was the remaining Quaker in double-figure scoring, finishing with 10 points on 5-of-13 shooting.

Shenandoah’s Holly Chittenden led all scorers with 17 points on 5-of-12 shooting from the field and 7-of-7 shooting from the foul line. Chittenden also added six rebounds and four blocks.

The Quakers shot 44.4 percent from the field and only needed to sink one three-point shot to grow their advantage. Guilford remained consistent shooting all throughout the contest, shooting 44.8 percent in the first half and 44.1 percent in the second frame. The Hornets shot 27.3 percent from the field including 25 percent in the first half. Shenandoah slightly improved their shooting in the second half, shooting 29.6 percent.

The Quakers held the advantage on rebounds, 46-31, producing 12 second-chance points. The Hornets notched 10 points off the offensive glass. Guilford’s inside offense also held the edge over the Hornets, out-scoring Shenandoah in the paint, 28-16. Guilford’s bench held a decisive advantage, out-scoring the Shenandoah bench, 21-0.

The Quakers return action Wednesday, hosting Roanoke College for a 5 p.m. ODAC contest.
