GREENSBORO, N.C. – Roanoke College’s Cary Beahm led all scorers with 22 points as Guilford College dropped a Wednesday evening Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) contest to Roanoke, 61-57.
The Quakers (8-6, 2-3 ODAC) opened the first 4:31 of the opening period on a 12-4 run and extended their lead to nine points three times up to the 8:50 mark of the half. The Maroons countered with a 12-2 run over the next 4:40 to tie the game for the first time. Closing the half, Roanoke finished with a 24-6 run in the final 8:50 to claim their largest lead of the game (eight points). Guilford tied the game with 8:47 left in the second stanza with Heaven Walters (Yadkinville, N.C./Starmount) sunk a three-pointer and earned the game’s fourth tie when Brittany Drew (Greensboro, N.C./Page) sunk a jumper with 1:45 left. Roanoke’s Meghan Gadell countered 59 seconds later with a layup to break the tie, leading the Maroons to the win.
Drew led Guilford scorers with 14 points on 6-of-14 shooting while pulling down four rebounds and distributing three assists. Anais Weatherly (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mount Tabor) notched her sixth double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Walters came off the bench to score 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field, scoring 10 of her 12 points in the second half. Jennette Taylor pulled down eight rebounds and dished out seven assists.
Beahm added five rebounds to her 22 points, one of three Maroons in double-figure scoring. Gadell added 10 points while Markia Beckwith came off the bench to score 13 points with six assists, scoring 11 of those points in the first half.
Guilford shot 41.3 percent from the field in the contest. After shooting 50 percent in the first half, the Quakers shot 33.3 percent to close out the game. Roanoke shot 41.3 percent from the field, powered by 51.9 percent first-half shooting. Roanoke scored seven field goals in the second half to shoot 30.4 percent for the period. Roanoke also shot 14-of-19 from the foul line in the contest compared to the Quakers’ 2-of-6 shooting from the charity stripe.
Roanoke held the edge in inside scoring, out-scoring Guilford, 24-20, in the paint. Guilford held the advantage on the glass, out-rebounding the Maroons, 41-31, with 13 offensive rebounds.
Guilford returns to action Saturday, traveling to Randolph-Macon College for a 2 p.m. ODAC contest.
