Schnuck Breaks HPU Weight Throw Record At Winston-Salem State Open

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Junior Jamie Schnuck etched her name into the HPU record books Sunday, setting a new indoor school record in the weight throw to lead the High Point University women’s track & field team on day one of the Winston-Salem State Open.

Schnuck registered a mark of 15.46m (50-8.75), breaking the previous school record mark of 15.41m (50-6.75m) set by Lynee Pina at last season’s UCS Invite.

“Jamie’s journey is just an incredible story,” associate head coach Eric Dudley said. “We did not recruit Jamie – I saw her on move-in day her freshman year and thought she’d be a great thrower, but thought it would take two years. I invited her to join the team having never seen her perform. I don’t know if she believed me at the time, but less than two years later she is now the school record holder in the weight throw. She’s a wonderful student and a wonderful teammate. This is a phenomenal story.”

In addition to Schnuck’s record day, the Panthers also performed well in the pole vault, with junior Alyssa Palenchar capturing the event title with a mark of 3.40m (11-1.75). Sophomore Madison Depner placed third with a vault of 3.10m (10-2) while senior Ashton Kirby was sixth (2.90m, 9-6.25).

In the women’s 60m dash, freshman Mikaela Campbell led HPU with a 17th-place finish (8.07 seconds), while junior Emily De Lena was 20th in 8.14. Sophomore Amanda Gregory placed 25th (8.30) and Schnuck finished 28th in 8.39 seconds.

In jumps action, junior Erica Hermann led the Panthers with a sixth-place finish in the high jump (1.52m, 11-1.75).

Gregory led HPU with a ninth-place showing in the long jump (5.12m, 16-9.75). Freshman Kela Seals posted a strong mark of 4.93m (16-2) to place 14th and sophomore Alyn Carr was 15th in 4.88m (16-0).

“There was some rust to shake off coming back from the holidays but I’m pleased with the competitive nature of our team,” Dudley said. “This meet is a chance for the athletes and coaches to assess where we are. It’s nice to see our athletes integrating some elements in order to take that next step to reach another level of success and performance.”

HPU wraps up the Winston-Salem State Open on Monday beginning at 10 a.m. at the JDL Fast Track.
